I feed him flakes made for betas. But he is having difficulty eating it..everytime he grabs a flake, he spits it out in pieces while chewing. I'm afraid he will starve or not get enough nutrients. He swims in a certain pattern around the aquarium plant to indicate that he wants food - that's when I feed him.

What should I feed him? The flakes not working and I can tell from his behavior.

Bettas typically don't like flakes. Get some floating pellets and some freeze-dried bloodworms instead.

Buy the pellets instead of the flakes. They float at the top for awhile and your fish will grab them at the top. Besides the flakes dirty up the water faster. Just two or three in the morning and a couple at night will keep your Betta happy. In nature Bettas subsist almost exclusively on insects and insect larvae. They are built with an upturned mouth that is well suited to snatching any hapless insect that might fall into the water. Internally their digestive system is geared for meat, having a much shorter alimentary track than vegetarian fish. For this reason, live foods are the ideal diet for the betta, however they will adapt to eating flake foods and frozen and freeze dried foods.
Brine shrimp, Daphnia, plankton, tubifex, glassworms, and beef heart, are all excellent options that may be found frozen or freeze dried.
However, If flake food is fed, it should be supplemented with frozen and freeze-dried foods, and if possible live foods.
