A betta would be okay in a 1 1/2 gallon tank. However, please know that many bettas kept in tanks that small suffer from finrot and other diseases (just read through some of the betta questions here) because they can not be properly taken care of in a 1 1/2 gallon tank. Such small tanks are difficult to heat. Even if your room is like 75F, the water will only be 65F - and bettas need 80F to be healthy.
Ammonia will also accumulate quite quickly, and if you don't clean the water very often your fish will suffer from mild to severe ammonia poising.

Look into getting a bigger tank. Even a 5 gallon can be properly cycled (with the AZOO palm filter) and heated. Your betta will be happier and more colourful.

If you MUST go with your 1 1/2, try to keep it close to a lamp to heat the water, and replace 50% of the water EVERY day.

Oh, for the love of the fish gods, do NOT get a guppy or an algae eater!!! No fish can survive in a 1 1/2 gallon. The exception would be a betta... but even then, bettas cannot thrive in tanks that small.

Another option for your tank would be like a plant tank? Get some small plants and some shrimp. Less exciting, but definitely pleasing to the eye. Ever see a cherry red shrimp? :)

The best creatures for a 1 1/2 gallon tank would eb SeaMonkeys. It is a common misconception that bettas should be kept in such small tanks, they need like 10 gallons, with other fish (no other bettas though). Don't keep him with tetras, or else Lil Dude will have no tail.

Oh, Also, Raise the seamonkeys in their regular tank first, when they grow, transfer to the big one. Otherwise the tank will not even hatch them

Yes, you can keep a beta in a 1 1/2 gallon tank. A tank that size is only big enough for one fish though.

get a betta... keep the tank clean.. and feed the betta a wide variety of foods.. he'll live for 2-5 years.

that tank is a little big for a betta considering they could survive in a glass of water. maybe consider a algie eater or a few guppies
