Fish - November 2006

I really don't understand why. He's still active, and he's still aggressive with his food (although, he's started to regurgitate some of it...) but he's blanching. I don't understand why, because we have another betta (who eats the same food and has the same living conditions) that is still as bright as ever.

Should I be worried?

I have a betta fish, he was doing okay until a couple days ago. He has recently taken to not moving much and usually spends his time laying on the bottom of the bowl or resting at the top of a plant. He was a lot more active than he is now, he is for the most part motionless. Anyone know whats wrong?

I was told by the wife of a popular local fish store that Glowlight Danios are injected with dyes to give them their color and appearance. I hope that's not true. Can anybody help me with this?

My fantail goldfish got stuck to the filter intake last night. I got him off, put him in a seperate tank without a filter for the time being. He is still alive, but very weak. He floats for a few mins, and then will swim a few inches, and float again. I tried to get him to eat, but he wont. He made it through the night, and seemed a bit better today. But I dont know what else to do. Im not ready to give up on him yet. HELP!

I have got a new fresh water tank of 180 litres. Required installation is in place, water is analysed. I got green light from the installer to go ahead. First day I introduced three loaches, 1 gouramy, 1 algae eater. No problems. Third day I added 1 gouramy, 1 loach and 10 platies. 12 hours later now one of the platies is dead, apparently for no reason. I am worried. Should I watch out for any symptom of a disease? What does an expert do in such a case? Any help will be highly appreciated. Thanks.

Right now we have 4 guppies (2 mail and 2 Female, we think) and A female beta living happily in a 20 Gallon tank, there are plenty of plants and fun things for them but still 2 of them swim quite vigorously with each other. We believe that these are the 2 males, the slightly larger of the two has a very spotted tail and flairs it when they are together almost like he is showing off, saying "Ha! Look at my fin, its spottier than yours 'flitter flitter flitter'". The slightly smaller Male is redder and its spots darkening. They do seem to 'fight,' like trying to nip at each other. Why is this? Am I doing something wrong? Is there anything we can do to help them? These fish are only a couple of months old, and as far as we know they have not birthed anything, they were given to us from a neighbor who got them from working at the humane society. If you need any more information I am happy to supply it!

I have 2 bettas' in a separated tank. I've had one about 6-7 months longer then the other. They are both males. Problem...one of them has been sitting on the bottom of the tank for about 3-4 days now and hasn't really moved...does anyone have any idea what might be wrong? This is not his normal behavior. There is no filter but there is a automatic bubble maker in the take for oxygen. Also, I do put the needed drops for the water in the tank everytime I clean the tank.

I don't know what made me think of this, but I think it would be neat if they could make a prosthetic tail for someone if they lost both legs. They would be able to swim underwater like a fish. It seems possible...has anyone else ever thought about this? BTW, I don't mean to offend anyone by asking this so I'm sorry if I do.

ica rock?
Is mica rock aquarium safe? I've researched it and the consensus came back about 50/50 for yes/no. I don't see any metal on the mica rock i have but i don't want to harm my fish (soon will be african cichlids). My tank is empty right now so it is no problem to remove it but i spent $35 on the rocks. Should I be cautious and just eat the $35?

I have a male beta fish, he is in a 3 gallon tank all by himself, and I want to get him a "friend". I know that male betas can commonly attck each other, but I am not sure how they react to other species of fish. My friend has a few extra guppie fish that are only about 2 months old, they are about 1 inch long now. Is it wise to add 1 or 2 guppie fish to my betas tank? I know theres plenty of room for an extra fish (3 gallon tank right now), and both fish are low mantinance fish. Can someone please tell me if you think this is a bad idea, or if the beta might somehow react violently?

Thank you!!

I have a 20 gallon tank, stocked as follows:
1 swordtail
1 molly
1 pleco
2 glass catfish
3 brilliant rasboras
4 ghost shrimp

I'm wondering how often I ought to do water changes (25%). Also, when I do water changes, what do I need to do to make the water safe for my fish? My tap water is extremely hard, and contains lots of chemicals. I have a PUR filter on the tap -- does that make the water safe for fish, or do I have to take other steps?

Here are my questions:

1.) How big should it be? (Nothing over 110 gallons please. I'd like to keep it small.)

2.) Should I get goldfish or koi?

3.) How many goldfish or koi should I put in?

4.) What should I do with the fish in the winter? It gets freezing cold up here in Northern Illinois... should I get a large heater, or put them inside?

5.) What should I feed them?

6. Any more info?

7.) Any websites?

Thanx

I'm thinking of making a set of LED lights that I can mount to my fishtank to act as spotlights. How safe are LEDs when they get wet? Is there a way to use them underwater? Finally, what's the best way to power them? I'm thinking of using a PC power supply, but suggestions will be welcome.
