I don't know what made me think of this, but I think it would be neat if they could make a prosthetic tail for someone if they lost both legs. They would be able to swim underwater like a fish. It seems possible...has anyone else ever thought about this? BTW, I don't mean to offend anyone by asking this so I'm sorry if I do.

It'd be totally awesome.

Set-ups already exist that can allow prosthetic arms that move in response to mental commands.

There's one out-there scientist who theorized that we could add mechanical wing sockets, or spread out some of our ribs to create a glider-like effect.

I agree with other posters, though, in that keeping the upper half from rotting or simply drowning while underwater may be a challenge...

If his nub isn't wiggling because we're not supportive of your idea of giving him a prosthetic tail, it's not wiggling beause you're depressed and he's responding to your depression. I have an Aussie whose tail was docked, and as far as he's concerned, when he wiggles his stump, he thinks he's wagging his tail. Dogs are not like humans. They don't miss or feel sorrow over the loss of any limb, whether it's a leg or a tail or an ear. They don't feel any loss. They don't miss it. They don't have any interest in going through a painful surgery to get a prosthetic. Only humans feel that way. You're putting your human feelings on the dog, who doesn't care, and probably thinks his tail is there when he wiggles his nub The best christmas present you can give him is for YOU to get over YOUR feelings of loss because he has no tail. He NEEDS you to be happy so he can enjoy life again. So, get your act together. YOU are upsetting your dog by your depression over his lack of a tail. -!-

Of course it's possible, but the person would get water logged after awhile. Imagine how they would look and feel on land crawling around with that tail on! Sort of like a fish out of water??

I suppose, but I don't see why you would want to. People spend most of their time out of water anyway; what use would a tail be for walking? Besides, they sell these flipper things that you can wear in the water, and guess what - they're removeable.
