Fish - October 2006

I feel that my oscar is frightened going to the surface for feeding, I dont know the reason. If I drop it not-floating type feed, as it moves down, oscar is the first fish to take a snatch. Same is the thing with beefheart & worms.
But when it comes to pellets it never eats them, it goes to the top, tries to grab one, then suddenly retards as if it is scared of something.
It must be habituated to pellets because if Iam not at home, no one will take the tension of getting the worms or cutting beef heart for it, thell just drop some pellets at it.
So what must be done to familiarize with pellets, definitely in need of an experienced (reason &) solution to it.

My baby guppies are 1 month old. And I realized that their tail are like a needle or a pin. My adult guppies do not have this problem. Anyone has this problem before? And anyone know why?

They will flare at my brother's betta and my brother's betta flares at them. But they don't ever flare at each other! Why is this? It's like they're gaining up against my brother's betta but they have a love for each other. Do they understand they are brothers? Why do they do this? It's like this:

M1= Mine1#
M2= Mine 2#
B= Brother's betta
()= Flare
NF= No flare
M1()B
M2()B
B()M1
B()M2
M1(NF)M2

Aorry if that was confusing. You can just follow the words. But WHY WHY WHY do they do this????

Staying in Arkansas for a few weeks and it seems pretty depressing around Little Rock and the drivers are horrible. But are there any good rivers, creeks, or small lakes to fish in this state that aren't crowded all the time? Just looking to get away while I'm here.

He loves fish so I'm taking him to the state aquarium but i want to surprise him with a very small aquarium for his very very small college living quarters. I have a beta so I want to get him something different. What kinds of fish can survive in a small small tank?

Used to have Discus for 5 years. I am thinking to switch my tank to saltwater fish but I am afraid that I don't have enough time to take care of it and too difficult. (My dog now take the pripority) Would African Cichlid be much easier compared to saltwater.

I've had my betta for over a year now, and while he has not always been the most active fish, I could tell that he was healthy. Yesterday, after I changed his water (I've got him housed in one of those little 1/2 gallon plastic things) I noticed he seems really sick. He's gasping for air at the top, and he's lying floating on his side. Every once in a while he'll swim to the bottom, but it seems like he's too weak and he's being pushed upwards again. He also has a loss of appetite. His body looks pretty normal, so I'm sure it's not a fungal infection. However I don't know what it is...any ideas on how to treat this?

I have 2 green puffers, one molly, one swordtail, 5 tetras, and an algae eater. I added a male and female guppy the day before yesterday, I got up yesterday morning and my male guppy was dead, and it's tail had been all torn up. I assumed it died and then they just tryed to eat it then. Then this morning I got up and saw my female had her tail completely eaten off and she was dead. All my others are fine. I added the puffers the same day, the others I have had a long time. Which of these fish is being mean? I guess I can't have guppies with them. :(

So I have a I think 10 gallon tank unless it is 20 and I am going to have tropical fish. Can I use tap water to fill it up and dilute the water with the supplies I bought from the pet store? I am going to start tonight any more details on starting the water and making it work?

I came home today and noticed that my betta's gills seemed a little white. You can barely even tell it, and I may be just over exaggerating. I still thought I should ask to see if anyone might think it is something serious. I get paranoid about things like this. Do you think something is wrong or is it just me?

I have a lot of green algae (I think it's bubble) in my saltwater aquarium. I also have red hair algae, but it's not as big a problem. The green is overtaking my tank! It's growing over my corals, it's even getting on my anemone! I scrape it off, vacuum it out, change the water, use chemiclean algae killer...IT KEEPS COMING BACK!!! How do I get rid of it? Please help!!

I have a 55 gallon with 3 2" cichlids, 1 6" jack demsey, an algae eater, and a narrow black fish, don't know what it is but he has a hammerhead and my son calls him a shark, but he's not the typical silver type mini shark. He's 5" --> anyone know what he might be called?.

I have few fish & I haven't done a water change in quite a while -- about 10 months. We have very hard water so I know the water gets harder if you don't do water changes and just keep topping off the tank, however, all of the fish were happy anyway & I had no fatalities.

(1) I did a half tank water change 2 days ago. How soon can I add new fish?

(2) While vacuumming the gravel, as you can imagine, tons of particles fog the tank during my cleaning. I felt really bad. Is this bad for this fish? Is it hard for them to breathe?

(3) Is it normal for fish to open and close there mouth inside the tank? I never noticed but am nervous

(4) Can I add Oscars to my cichlid/jjack demsey tank?

Oh Henry!

Hi, my name is Henry. I am 14 years old, and boy, do I love computers! Go ahead, I’ve heard the snickers before. People think I am from Mars or the Milky Way because I love computers. Even my sister (I call her Baby Ruth) thinks that I am nutrageous. She always says, “I don’t see what you find fun about those whatchamacallits.” Who needs sisters anyway?
You see, I am all butterfingers so I don’t fit in at sports. I can’t hold on to a ball to save my life. Therefore, computers are perfect for me. I think of my mouse, my keyboard, and me as the 3 musketeers. So, every time I think about computers, I get so excited that I do tootsie roll!
Laugh now. It’s okay. When I grow up I want to be a computer programmer. You wait until payday and see the mounds of money that I’ll be making! We’ll see who’ll be laughing at whom then.

The End.
