Yeah you use tap water, then the stuff that neutralizes the clorine in the water, just be sure to follow the directions on the bottle. You need to have a filter too. The basic rule for fish is 1 inch of fish per gallon of water, so try not to overfill it. I have a bit over that, I have 10 fish in a 10 gallon tank but one is a algae eater, so he stays out of the way of the others, just stays along the wall. You will need a light and possibly a heater depending on the type of fish you have, they will let you know at the pet store.

Honestly my experience was pretty much the same, get the tank filled in with water from the tap and put the fish in there. So far they are living happy. Its been quite a while. I only ensured that the water is just right temparature. Not too cold nor too warm. Adding chemicals which the pet store does help but i didnt find it necessary. Good luck, they are treat to watch especially if you have a flourescent lamp in there.

I second the answerer who said African Rope Fish (aka Reed Fish). They are way cool, but be advised they do like live food. Meal worms work well. Be sure to price out everything before settling on a tank. You'll need a filter, a water heater, a test kit, chemicals, gravel, and ornaments, and that before you even get any fish. It's easy to spend 2x to 3x more than you originally expected in this hobby. Another good option is to looked for a used set up on Craigslist. You can often get great deals that come with all the accesories.

First of all make sure you have a water treating chemical form the pet store that removes chlorine and other dangerous thigns in tap water. Then set up the whole tank and allow it to run for a day before putting your fish in. THis will make it more stable. Make sure you have all necessary supplies like a gravel cleaner and siphon and things like that. And also use a heater if your water is too cold.

Get some water conditioner. Fill it with tap water, put the conditer in it, and let it run for a day or so with the filter/pump on. Get a tank heater and make sure that it is set to whatever temperature range your fish need.

you can use tap water to fill up the tank but let the water sin in the tank a day or two. i would look up fish on the Internet to see what kind you want to. guppies are my favorite fish because if you get a male and a female they will have Babbie's. i have a tank full of guppies and they can be different collars and they are nice to other fish.
