I had two fish (one died yesterday) and the one that's left looks lonely all by itself. I know normally fish live in shoals so should I buy another one to keep it company or might it attack other fish? (it used to be small but has grown to about 3-4 inches long over the years so he's quite a big fry). Sensible answers please - no suggestions for fish dating agencies or sending him to the local fish and chip shop!

I was considering a skilter filter, since it does protein skimming also, but read some pretty awful reviews.... does the brand even matter? I was considering whisper, or an emperor biowheel.... The horizontal space is limited, so I will not be able to fit a protein skimmer over the side (there is a hole in the lid for a hang-on-back-filter and heater).

My blue opaline (sp?) gourami seems to think he is a bass. He does this belly flop kind of jump like largemouth bass do and splashes water out of the tank. Noone believes he splashes like that but when he thinks he's about to be fed or gets spooked if I walk by too quickly then he jumps.

I just introduced 20 female guppies to my 9 fancy male guppies in order to calm the males down. I'm monitoring the fish in order to make sure they acclimate, and I've noticed they're hanging out at the bottom of the aquarium a lot...just sitting there. I did a water test and my nitrates are high as normal b/c I don't have any real plants, but other than that the water is fine. They don't usually sleep on the bottom so I ruled that out. What the heck is wrong? Are they just trying to get their groove on?

Why don't the female and the male beta fish fight when you put them together to breed them? And how do you tell a male beta from a female beta?

I have an aquarium in my office cabin and very difficult for a frequent water change. I need to keep fish that require a minimum water changing cycle. I have a bio-filter and sponge filter and air stone installed. The gravel is good quality and so are some aquatic plants. But I can not change water in less than a month.

Wikipedia sucks so don't even bother. And I know how to use a search engine like yahoo and ask Jeeves. So don't bother with that either. Just tell me if you know a good websight and I'll give some one a best answere. Thanks ;-)

Im looking for some large Koi carp for my pond. Ideally, i want them to be from about 9" to about 12" in size. We want blacky/orange ones and silver/grey kinds-we have found some, but dont know what kind of price they usually sell for? Does anyone know or have a rough idea of the prices please? Also, how long do they live for-obviously so long as a nieghbours cat gets them!! If there is no danger (like cats, herons etc!) whats a Koi carps life span please!?

I once brought an archer fish and the seller adviced me that the fish is being kept in freshwater.
I got it home (i can't remeber how long) but it didnt live long.
Is he right? are there Archer fish that can be kept in freshwater?

I have just had the tank for 2 weeks now, so I am still a newbie at this! The water in the tank is beginning to get low...there are only 2 goldfish in the tank...can I add a cup or two of water and this be okay??? I know that I have to add the stuff to get rid of the chlorine from the water, but how much do you add when you are just adding a small amount of water? My tank is still spotless, so I don't want to replace all of the water. THANK YOU!

Why do people think that bettas are killing machines? If you do any research at all then you would find that bettas are pretty much push-overs as far as aggressive fish go. There is tons of information about them and what proper tank mates would be. They are often kept with community tropical fish.

How did they get such a ridiculous reputation?
