Rather than going to the pet store, give Craigslist or Freecycle a shot. It's hit or miss, but you can often find some good quality equipment on there for well below your price range. When shopping, find out the brand names and compare them to the online prices.

Well as a tropical marine hobbyist, i suggest not to spend alot of money unless you are going to be serious about being a hobbyist. OK, i would always go with what i think is large enough for the room I'm going to place it in. Trust me once you buy a small aquarium, you will always want to upgrade it's volume. Also you can have a over flow box with a small bio filter or, much easier go with an under ground filter. If you want to spent the money go with an Ehime filter canister they are great. You can place heater in the tank but, make sure that every thing that you buy to run the aquarium can handle 10 to 20 more gallons than your aquarium is. If you tank is 50gallons you may always want to buy a filter, heater, water pumps etc. for 75 gallons or more. But don't over do it like blast your fish out of the water. And always acclimate the fish slowly before putting it into the water, it will live longer. And don't over populate too.

A ten gallon tank with ALL the supplies ean cost that much. All is relative. You may be including every last thing or just the basics. Anyway, go to you local fish store for the tank and hood. As for heater and filter, check out this website http://www.bigalsonline.com/?splash_done=1 for a visi therm stealth at 5 watts per gallon, and an aquclear 110. Also, get the other supplies there and at your fish store
