Hy there! My real name is Danilov and I'm a vet specialized on exotic and tropical fish. I have over 150 species in my private aquarium(s). I think I can help you with your question.
Small remark: now they call it "Chinese fighting fish"? Come on! LOLL LL. It is known as the Vietnamese fighting fish. not Chinese.
There are a some species of fish that go with the Betta. There are the small sharks, like the red tined black shark, form Philippines, they don't eat fish only clams, that are bigger than a Betta. The Hemiscyllium ocellatum species would be just wright for you. They are clam eaters too so don't worry. You'll have to get some Sand for your aquarium and loose the plants, cause the ocellatum likes to hide under the sand ( not to prey but because they are shy, for real. Also they are nocturnal sharks.)
Hope I've helped you even a bit!
Cheers!

Since it sounds like you have a male betta fish, he's best to be left alone. Males are very aggressive so they do not get along very well with other fish. If you think he feels lonely maybe get some ghost shrimp or a frog to put in there.

It isn't lonely. I have seen them in petshops in tanks with other fish only because when the store got them in, they didn't have enough little tanks to put them. The pet store guy said that they actually do NOT do well in the tanks with the other fish.

Betta fish eat every other kind of fish that will fit in your tank. They fight. He's best off by himself, lonely or not.

You have to get a nonaggressive fish that does not have a long tail. ie:platys, tetras. ect.
