Fish - June 2006

In the last two days I've lost 4 fish and one more is dying right now. I bought them about a month ago, three were Tetras and one was a guppy. I added the proper chemicals, although I haven't had a chance to vaccum the gravel. Could this be it? Is this what's killing my fish? Or is it something else?

I have a portioned off "refugium" in my 55 gallon tank, with all sorts of macro-algae, rotifers, microorganisms, etc in it.

Since both seahorses come from the same habitat (the gulf of Mexico) can I keep them together?

Miniatures would be wild caught and erectus would be from captive bred sources.... or is it more of an issue/problem to mix captive bred with wild caught than to mix the species?

PS: I have a great brine shrimp hatchery system going for the miniatures, and the petstore with frozen food for the erectus is just up the street :-)

If you put your Betta fish in clean fresh water that is not the same temperature as the water the fish was previously in, how badly would that affect your Betta? Because when transferring your fish into different water, directions say that the water should be the same temperature.

My 6 yo son has a male beta fish in a small tank w/a bubbler. Does anyone know what we could put in the tank to clean it? Some type of fish, crab or something that will clean up the tank so he doesn't have to clean it so often...and the male betta will not kill or attack the cleaner.
Any help please.

Few years ago we discovered a few small baby fish in our pond, which we kept seperately and one survived!
The fish are behaving strangely, one is just resting on the pond side opening and closing it`s mouth, and then occasionally going on it`s side. Another seems to be following it`s movements, but no obverious eggs etc ! Just want to know so we can rescue the babies, as we have other fish which may eat them!! Is it the right time of year, and how do the fish behave?

My last aquarium had an outbreak of alge all over the ornaments and plants. In vancouver I have seen a pet shop with aquariums that have virtually no alge for the past 6 months I have visited. How do you think sha manages this? When I ask her she ejust says she changes the water everyday and makes sure most of the food is eaten but however I tried that without similar results, and we are in the same area with the same water source.I was wondering if you could tell me what is the best things to do to keep the water clear and alge free. Bio geek could you please advise? Help would be very much apprciated. thank you!

I have just bought my first aquarium. I set it up a few days ago, and got the filter and heater running to start preparing the water. I have no live plants or fish yet. After 4 days, the water still seems a little cloudy when you look through the length of the tank, and there also seems to be a film on the top of the water. I have just increased the flow of the pump to try and clear the cloudiness, but what can I do about the film on the surface? I want to make sure that the tank is ready for the plants, and then the fish !!
