Goldfish can and do get infections however they are hardier than many tropical fish and therefore are less likely to get ich or other infections. Most goldfish deaths result from keeping them in containers that are too small; ie. lack of oxegyn, ammonia poisoning.

Let's dig a little deeper. Yes Koi and Goldfish get ich, in fact they are one of the most common carriers of ich. But they are a hearty fish, so they don't show any signs of the infection. Be sure though, if you put them in a tank with other fish (say feeding an Oscar) you can be sure that your fish will be showing signs of ich, fungus, hole in the head and of nasties with in a short time.

Goldfish and Koi are extremely hearty fish but they can and do get ick. It is more prominent in tank raised fish but can actually occure in ponds too. Standard treatment will rid of the infections quickly but many times (in healthy tanks and ponds) the immune system of these hearty critters kicks in and kills the infection before the owner ever knew there was a problem.

i do no longer think of your shubunkin goldfish has ick. Ick feels like little white grains of salt and whether it replace right into a quarenten tank must be a minimum of a 30 gallon with a filter out and the therapy yet i think of shubunkin goldfish is meant to have black spots around it. If it truly is not your shubunkin your fish pond has intense amonia you ought to have a filter out and a pipe to you significant water supply that treats the water for water and unsafe materials !!

Actually they can, but they are hardier than most other fish, therefore, they resist disease more than other fish.
