Because it's an animal that you are taking into your home and providing a healthy environment for. That makes them pets.
Plus, there are several types of marine fish that cost more than a dog or a cat would.

A pet is defined as :
1. An animal kept for amusement or companionship.
2. An object of the affections.
Well, some people love their fish. They are pets because they take feeding and other necessities to live, they aren't like bugs who can just walk in the house and find food. The fish rely on you for their life.

Let's see they don't ask to be brought to your home, nor do they ask for a tank with maybe sometimes clean water and then again maybe not so clean. They also can't run to Walmart to get fish food flakes so that my friend is why FISH are counted as pets. Just as many elderly call young people pets, they can't take care of themselves, someone else has too.

Maybe the fish are the only animals they have, so they are considered their pets. Also some people just love all animals, and consider any animal in their home a pet. For myself, I consider a pet one that I can hold and actually "pet".

I have two salt water tanks. one is 46 gal. (avg. cost $1200.00) and a 10 gal quarantine tank. they are the most relaxing things to watch when you are stressed. I consider them pets because I have to take as much care and time into my tanks as I do my three dogs and two house cats. Dogs and cats understand when you are upset, and that makes you feel better. Same as the fish. They relax ya. I also agree with metalchick. Some of my fish are costly. But so worth it.

I dunno...I consider pets to be what you can interact with like cats, dogs, maybe even gerbils and hamsters. Fish, reptile, and birds are more like exotic home decor.

because they are great fun, friendly and show you loads of affection. Personally I like cuddling up to mine, and enjoy the long walks in the woods
