Red Pacu and Alligator Gar
both can be kept in smaller tanks, but prefer as big as you can afford to go, the Pacu loves fruits and are docile towards the Gar, Gar are aggressive against smaller fish and it's cool watching them feed on "feeder goldfish"... i have kept both of these in the same tank with no problems
If you like to watch your tank fill up with babies, go for any type of Mollies- they are live bearers and you'll end up seeing 'fry' in the tank - remember though, each male needs 2-3 females to breed with

Tetras are good fish for a beginner's fish tank. Neons, Black Neons, Rasboras, Rummynose, Danios... these are some cool looking tetras. They school together so they look nice. If you have a good activated carbon filter you can have 1-1.5 tetras per gallon. Use a heater and keep the temperature at 80 F for most freshwater tropical fish. Seahorses are not freshwater fish, first responder. I agree that upside down cats are cool. My favorite fish is the Polypterus but you need a huge tank for those eventually.

Zebra Danios, plattys, and guppies are wonderful fish to consider buying for a fresh water fishtank. Not only are they beautiful fish, but they are easy to breed and care for, and they get on with each other just fine. You shouldn't buy just one of each, you should get, depending on the tank size, a moderate sized school of each. (4-6)

I have a red devil cichlid that's a ton of fun! I don't recommend this kind of fish if you want to have a community tank, but I've been into fish for 10 years and these are my favorites! Most fresh water fish are kinda boring and don't really interact with you. My red devil is as interested in humans as we are of him! When you walk into the room he follows you, when you put your face up to the glass he hits it with his mouth, you can feed him feeder fish, chunks of hamburger, worms from your yard... even mice! They are small and cheap and grow fast.

If you don't have a heater, you can pretty much only choose from goldfish (any kind), koy, or beta (but-it's true only one beta in a tank, because they are hostile and will attack all other fish). I had a little frog, too, once, but it died. Also sometimes you can get away with putting plycostimus in a tank (botton feeder), if the temperature won't vary too much or get too cold.

I like upside down catfish. They're unique and funny. Ghostknives are pretty cool looking. um...not sure what else but there are two ideas to get you started. You could look up what kinds of fish get along well with these.
