In a nutshell, no. New World cichlids like a lower pH and soft water while African cichlids like a high pH and brackish water. Some African cichlids (like yellow labidiochromis) or South Americans (e.g. Angel fish or Blue Rams) can be acclimated to the water parameters of a community tank and are more docile (as a rule) than others. Make sure you school them and offer a big tank with plentiful hiding places, plants, and rock work so territoriality doesn't become and issue. Your best bet would be to keep your species in an environment that replicates their natural state.

I wouldn't recommend it. Cichlids are naturally aggressive. I have a hard time keeping different species of Africans together. Check out the cichlid forum at http://www.cichlid-forum.com and post your question there.

If by "American & New World" you mean the cichlids typically known as South American (jack dempseys, oscars etc) then no!
