sorry i cant think of it, but theres a thing they can get that causes that, and there is med for it, call the pet store. also you may want to test the water, and do a water change, make sure you keep the water at the same temp for the type of fish you have, temps going up and down can cause dieseses in the tank.

They have a parasite most likely ich. Take a look at them and see if they have little white dots on them. Ich is always present in a tank but a fish only gets infected by it when they have a weak immune system from either being stressed (from bad water params, among other things) or if they are sick from something else. You can try meds but I like to use aquarium salt, its safer, causes less stress to the fish and will stop any secondary infections. You want the salinity of the water to be 3%, so you need to put in a teaspoon for every gallon, 3 times, 12 hours apart. So say your tank is 10 gallons (hopefully its at least a 55 gallon though cause the fish need the space and that could be why they now have ich) you will put 10 teaspoons into a cup of tank water until it dissolves then pour it into the tank, in 12 hours do it again then in another 12 hours do the last dose. You need to keep it in there until the fish are better so when you do a water change you need to put back in what you take out. If you take out 5 gallons then you need to put back in 15 teaspoons.

It is probably a parasite of some kind the most common type is called ich which is a short version of a scientific name. If your fish have it they will look like they have been sprinkled with salt. Medications for it are sold at almost all pet stores. Just follow the directions on the box.

the answers given are fairly good-one in particular--go to the pet store and describe the symptoms and they should know just what med you need-HOWEVER what they (and no one else has mentined due to most people not knowing) is during the treating of the tank, remove the "charcoal" in your filter as it "eats" up the medicine and really lessens the strength-make of the meds company admitted that to me. Also make sure it is safe for all fish including "scaless" fish before you do it (snails, loaches etc)

do they have white spots on them, you can go to the pet store and get them medicine. do they look like they are breathing fast? You need to get the medicine and follow the directions, then when the next time you clean your tank add the medicine again it will take about a week but they will stop rubbing. the parasites live in the gravel though so when you clean it the next few times then add a few drops.

Quick Cure is the best thing to ue for your fish. Use on drop for every two gallons of water if you have catfish or tetra's. Treat every day for 5 days. You may also use it every time you change or add water, or when adding new fish as a desease preventative.

When you do some water change, do you remove the chlorine in the water. If not, there's your problem. Fish doesn't like chlorine, it removes their protecting coating on them and then disease strike.
