Few years ago we discovered a few small baby fish in our pond, which we kept seperately and one survived!
The fish are behaving strangely, one is just resting on the pond side opening and closing it`s mouth, and then occasionally going on it`s side. Another seems to be following it`s movements, but no obverious eggs etc ! Just want to know so we can rescue the babies, as we have other fish which may eat them!! Is it the right time of year, and how do the fish behave?

The behavior you are describing is NOT spawning behavior for Koi!!!!! Your fish is in serious distress!! Check your amonia and nitrite levels immediately or you risk loosing your koi. your levels should both be at 0ppm. You also need to make sure there is sufficient oxygenation of the water and the pump is running all the time. If you dont have some type of aeration you need to do so immediately. To answer your question about spawning. Koi spawn in may and june in most climates but may continue to spawn into july with the right temps. When spawning the male will chase the female around until it can squeeze her between his body and a solid surface to force the eggs out. The eggs distribute throughout the pond in a sticky white substance and will cling to plants and rocks at the edges of the pond. It is difficult to retrieve the eggs w/o damaging them. Most breeders use a separate breeding pond and then retrieve the adults when spawning is over.

The gasping fish is in distress, if the others are fine you may just lose that one. You can get solar powered fountains for about £30, they keep the water moving and oxygenated at no extra cost and they provide shade.
Chlorine is dissolved as a gas in tap water and aerating it will drive it off very quickly, its probably better to just run it through a fountain than add even more chemicals to the water. If the chlorine levels in your area are very high then just leaving the water to stand for 24 hours will allow most of the chlorine to evaporate, but tipping it out of a jug back into the bucket will speed things up.
Koi lay at least 10,000 eggs but the adults will have eaten all the eggs and babies except for the one that survived. The babies need thick weed to hide in to increase the survival rate but would do even better in a separate aquarium or even just a 'fenced off' bit of the pond.

Sounds like you may have a contamination issue. Depending on where you live, your water may have Chloramine's in it. They are very toxic to fish. You must treat any tap water that is added to your pond, or fish tank beforehand. Otherwise check your ammonia level's. Most fish stores will check all of your levels for you. You can do a small water change, or even a 50 percent change if you wish. Go and buy some stress coat at your local pet shop and follow the directions on the bottle. The last thing going on in your pond is breeding...unfourtunatly.

that what you described sounds like low oxygen levels, put a hosepipe about 3-4ft above your pond and turn it on so a bit of water runs out.leave it on all night as that's the time oxygen levels are lowest.dont worry if your pond overflows. if there going to spawn its usually after some warm days and we get a cold spell and it warms up again, they begin to plought threw weeded areas rubbing them selves against each other, also you should notice white spawning tubercles on there gill covers. hope that helps.

They come in were I work every once ina while, comet bodes with the three tipped fancy tail! Very cute : ) I asked what they were called a few weeks back, no one knew : ( Best of Luck!
