I have two young male australian shepherds. We just moved to a new place in the mountains and the elk have started coming down into our canyon. I have been warned that the rangers will impound our dogs if they harrass the elk. I don't want to have to keep them penned up all day while we are gone to work. Any advice on how to teach them to stay away? I'm afraid their herding instinct will kick in and we'll have some really upset elk!

Dog tags just went up in cost here. I was curious what you all pay for them for your dog.
We live in one county and I work in another. One charges three dollars for a tag the other varies, but it goes up to 100 after new years for an unaltered dog.

My family and I have 2 6-pound, neutered male chihuahuas. We are considering getting a spayed, female, 2 pound yorkie from the petfinder classified sections. When we first got our 2nd chihuahua , the 2 dogs fought quite often in the first few days. I am wondering if it would be dangerous to introduce another dog into the family. I wouldn't want her to get hurt. Would being a female make her less of a territorial threat? Basically , I guess my question is "Do you think this is a good idea? Why or why not?" Thanks a bunch in advance.

I know there are benifits of neutering dogs, I am just wondering if there any disadvantage of neutering them other than breeding.

Why do dogs lick people? Do they do it to "kiss" us, or do we just taste good? Or is it another reason?

Just curious...

I normally check up on my answers to see what others may have posted or maybe the asker has some other comments to help them with their dogs...Nothing wrong with this, but this sicked me and I want to share it with all I work with abused dogs all the time trying to give them a second, third, even four chance at a good life and people are doing this? Who is behind it? Paris Hiton? Britney Spears?

Allergy free my butt....I work with dogs like this as I said and I may have to take shots soon. This I am not complaining about I would not trade it for a desk job where I can sleep all day and get paid. The point is they CLAIM this allergy free dog, and that is BOGUS I have severe allergies to dogs, Own two and cats and I LOVE WHAT I DO SO MUCH IF I GOTTA take a shot daily great
Have a look at it and share your thoughts I mean would you really pay this price for what you can get at a shelter and save a life to boot?
The site sicken me, just tell me what you think?

I was just curious how many people would take in or adopt a puppy/dog/pet from a shelter that was sick- whether it be worms, kennel cough, or some other more serious illness. When i went to adopt my pup they had told me she had her shots and was in good health. When i went back two days later after she was suppose to get spayed they informed me they didn't do the operation cause she had worms and kennel cough. Well although it turned out to be A LOT more serious than that they basically said take the dog and get her medical attention or pick out another dog. Of course i wanted her- i bonded with her and still adopted her. Well three weeks later she was still sick and had cost me about $3000.00. So my question is would you still adopt/buy a dog if it is unhealthy- although you fell in love with it right away?

I mean if you don't get it help who will?

Alright, so this seems to be a hot topic for the evening. What are your views on the whole "alpha dog", "submissive dog" theory? (Yes, it is a theory. Anything in the dog, or even scientific, world is simply a theory).

Go nuts. I would love as much information as possible on what you think.

PLEASE refrain from using "thumbs down" ratings. I understand if someone gives a completely misinformed answer, but otherwise these are OPINIONS, not FACTS. Remember- dominance and submission is only a THEORY!

I just answered a question about buying puppies without seeing them first from breeders and trusting your breeder to match you up perfectly with the right puppy. Several others did as I did and actually have purchased puppies and waited on a waiting list for months (even years) to get the right puppy.

I waited nearly a year for my cocker and would have waited longer had the person ahead of me in line not backed out of the puppy deal. My breeder did a fabulous job choosing the right puppy for me and my family and I wouldn't have done it any other way.

I'm the first to admit I don't know EVERYTHING about dogs or puppies. I of course did a fair amount of research while I was waiting for my puppy, but I wouldn't have had any idea which puppy would have best suited my family (considering I have little kids) or what "Show" or "Pet" quality would mean as a puppy. My dog is pet quality, I have no interest in showing.

If I ever buy another purebred dog again, I will do it the same.

I have a 15 month old APBT and my husband just decided he wants her ears cropped. I tried explaining we can't crop her ears cause she's to old. She had an apt with her vet for a check up this morning and I was told to ask the vet. The vet said not in his office. I told my husband our vet was against it. He also said her ears were perfect the way they lay. He wants to find another vet that will crop her ears. Our vet also said no reputable vet around here will crop over 12 weeks. How do I get him off this ear cropping thing?

For years I have seen, people preach that you should have homes lined up for your puppies before you breed, definitely before they are ready to go home. I'm curious as to how many people are actually willing to buy a pup that they haven't seen, or who's personality isn't really developed yet as they are still too small to really judge who they are going to be?

I know I wouldn't, but time and I again, I see people on here asking for advice, and countless peeps tell them, they should have already had homes lined up for them.

I just brought home my new puppy and he is so scared, he wont really play and now he is not eating either. He was with several other dogs at the store and he looks really depressed. Did I pick a bad one? I know I have to take him to the vet if he doesn't start eating really soon, but in the meantime... HELP!

people always think it would be cute to let there kids grow up with a puppy. What do you feel the biggest mistakes are that people make when deciding to add a puppy to the family? or even a child to the home that already has pets...

a little story from when I was a kid... my neighbors loved little Yorkies. I remember they had 2 totally cute ones... one day they ony had 1..and a week or 2 later they did not have either instead they had a puppy...soon the puppy was gone and replaced with a larger breed pup.. come to find out...their little boy found it fun to take their dogs and put them in the pool...he wanted to see them swim under water...needless to say they would drown... so why get more..why have any? what to do to prevent this and other things from happening...
