I have a 15 month old APBT and my husband just decided he wants her ears cropped. I tried explaining we can't crop her ears cause she's to old. She had an apt with her vet for a check up this morning and I was told to ask the vet. The vet said not in his office. I told my husband our vet was against it. He also said her ears were perfect the way they lay. He wants to find another vet that will crop her ears. Our vet also said no reputable vet around here will crop over 12 weeks. How do I get him off this ear cropping thing?

I would love for him to take her to the vet but his work hours wont allow it. She goes back in a few weeks to get spayed and I'm thinking I might have our vet write him a little note.

When I see a question about cropping ears or docking tails I could just cry.I mean it,sit right down and cry.
Don't we do enough to these loving and forgiving creatures without inflicting unnecessary harm and mutilation on them for our own need to have what in our estimation is a cool looking dog?
Keep to your guns and your pet will be better for it.She is lucky to have you there to defend her.
She is much too old now anyway.

Explain to him that is you have the dogs ears cropped at this age they will not stand. The cartlidge is already developed and has a crease from the ears being floppy for the last 15 months. The only possible way to get them to stand is to put an implant in the ear to make them stand and most reputable vets will not do this, and in all likelihood they will still not look right because the cartliged in the ear developed diffrently because her ears have been natural for over a year.

You take a stand and tell your husband this is not going to happen, period.

It would be incredibly cruel to crop your dog's ears at this age - it is no longer done at any age by most vets - and certainly isn't necessary even if you show your dog. Rules have changed and this is not encouraged by responsible people.
It is not even allowed any more on the show circuit in Europe.

I am very glad you have a vet decent enough to refuse to do this, I would keep going to him.

What are you afraid of? Your dog cannot stand up for himself,he is at your mercy. Your husband is being cruel and selfish to push this barbarity - you need to stop him or you are just as guilty of animal cruelty as he is.

He needs to get a conscience and some empathy for those he has power over - this guy would scare me, frankly. What's next? Your nose is too big and he wants it done? Just how perfect is he? Maybe he could use a little improvement by way of surger - which is what ear cropping is, by the way.

Seriously, take a stand here!!!

Look anywhere online, it SHOULD NoT be done. Personally, I like cropped ears (so I'm not against it for that), but your dog is wayyy tooo old. Cropping her ears now can really damage some nerves and will NEVER heal properly. They are supposed to be done when they are really young, so they can grow back, less painful, and will stand up. At this stage, your dog is too old.

Let your husband look all he wants......no vet would ever crop the ears of a dog that old, unless he wants a major lawsuit...

Explain to him, it isn't safe for her to have her ears cropped at her age. Tell him to go talk to your vet, and the vet will explain to him, that she is to old to have this done. I really hope you can talk him out of this, as if you did, i wouldn't trust the vet, as most reputable vets won't crop at her age, and god only knows what kind of materials would be used to preform that, with a vet willing to, could cause health issues, and problems for her in other area's.

Don't worry about it, there isn't a vet that will crop her ears anywhere. He can look and look and won't be able to find one. So if he says that he wants to find another vet, tell him that if he can find one that will crop a 15 month old dogs ears he is more than welcome to take the dog himself, to get it done. You're safe. It won't happen.

Good for you for getting her spayed.

Dont do it, the dog will suffer, and 9 out of 10 at this age he ears will not take well...its a WASTE OF MONEY, and the dog will suffer, it needs to be done as a puppy, before the muscle and cartilage has grown firm into the ears.

please dont do it, please,,,any vet that will do it at this age, is not a very good vet, or just does not care if the dog suffers from it........

Most vets won't crop after 16-20 weeks. My vet won't do any elective surgeries until the pup has had all of its shots including rabies. He won't crop after 20 weeks.

Tell him that if he had wanted it done that bad, he should have had it done when she was a pup. End of story.

Tell him its animal cruelty and your dog will be taken away. Since he's an APBT he'll likely end up being killed if he's taken away-they dont tend to last long in shelters because of the stigma.

You cant crop the ears at that age-it would cause incredible pain.

I highly doubt that your husband will ever find a vet to do the dog's ears at that age!!!
