Approach the dog from the side with your strong arm towards it's hind end. Place the dogs buttocks in the bend of your arm while wrapping your other arm around it's front end with the chest in the bend of your arm. If possible, grasp your hands. Lift with your legs, not your back.

Depending if you are just lifting up or carrying around.
To lift in a car. When I would lift up my 115 lb rottie, I would lift his front legs first and put them in the car, then lift up the back end.
To lift a 85 lbs dog I would put one arm under stomack and other at chest area (between legs and head). Watch your back!

I simply cannot lift a large dog. I call for help. In an emergency I will roll the dog onto a blanket and drag the blanket (I would hope to be pro-active enough in the care of my dog that I would never have a situation get to tht point though).
I also have a cart that I can put a dog on and roll. Getting it into the car would have to be one end at a time.

WTFever has perfectly described the way to lift a large dog. As a groomer, I have lifted dogs up to 130 lbs like this myself. Use the legs only.

When I lift my 70lb dog I put one arm across the front of his chest and the other arm behind his back legs. He almost looks hogtied. Try not to lift the dog on your own though, you could hurt your back or the dog.

I personally would not try to lift that size dog. He will not be comfortable with the process and may resist. Try lifting him putting your arms under him? and see how he reacts. Putting them outside his legs may fright him because he will feel captured and pinned down.

Here's my trick. My dogs are big and tall, so I have them put their paws on my chest and then I put one arm around their shoulder and twist to hoist them over my back. They lay across my lower back and use my arms to support them on either side. It's the same way I pick up their food! haha. I can't lift them any other way. I pick them up every couple days and carry them around for a minute or so, so that they stay used to it and won't struggle should the unthinkable happen and I have to pick them up in an emergency. Plus it's good exercises! Good luck and be careful!

First, I am wondering why you need to pick up your dog?
To put him in a car? To walk him outside?
If it is because your dog is disabled, there are many products you can get, or even make at home to help you.
I can post more links if you need... I had a disabled 85 lb german shepherd, so I have more info if you need it!

As Jen said, a ramp is your answer. Wouldn't have to do much building, just use a board, lay it over the stairs, make sure it's not slippery and not too steep, the longer the better.
