My family and I have 2 6-pound, neutered male chihuahuas. We are considering getting a spayed, female, 2 pound yorkie from the petfinder classified sections. When we first got our 2nd chihuahua , the 2 dogs fought quite often in the first few days. I am wondering if it would be dangerous to introduce another dog into the family. I wouldn't want her to get hurt. Would being a female make her less of a territorial threat? Basically , I guess my question is "Do you think this is a good idea? Why or why not?" Thanks a bunch in advance.

I don't know if this is relevant but I just got a cat and already had a puppy at first they fought but now they are like brother and sister, to me it is always best to just let the animals work it out for themselves. Also usually when you adopt an animal they will tell you if they are good with other animals.

The best way to introduce a new dog is a place other than their home. Meet at the park, separate cars with the two sets to be introduced. Let them meet on a lease and watch for aggression on either side. Have them on a lease do you can pull UP the minute you see the ears to forward and stop the motion. If they want to sniff each other...leave them alone and let them do their dog thing.
You can tell from their body language what is going to happen. Tail up and ears forward and aggressive body language, pull up on the lease to distract the attention. Tail out back and ears relaxed and maybe even a bow OK.

Each should trade smelling and even mounting. leave them along. When they jump around and do the doggie bow you know they will be OK.

Then if you all go home in the same car the old dogs will not resent the addition.

Most breeders will tell you to have a female and a male versus two of the same sex. I would think that it would be fine depends on how dominent this yorkie is. Have you had them around other female dogs in the past? Most of the time you can make things work with multiple pets.

The two males might fight over the female. Dogs form a hierarchy, in order of dominance. Generally speaking a male and female will get along, even if they both have dominant personalities. I would have the dogs all meet before you make such a commitment.
