Why do dogs lick people? Do they do it to "kiss" us, or do we just taste good? Or is it another reason?

Just curious...

Licking is a social behavior in that they lick to show that they are submissive to the one they lick. You will find that a submissing dog will lick a more dominant dog.

Licking can become obsessive. I have a very submissive sheltie that will just keep licking. I have taught her to stop when I tell her since she will just keep doing it until she gets sick. My dominant terrier has will not lick anyone (she is now 12 and never has)

I used to have a dog with an oral fixation. When I got her she was only like 5 weeks old and it was too early to take her away from her mom but I was a little kid so it's my dad's fault I don't really remember why we got her so early. But anyway she developed an oral fixation and she would lick EVERYTHING. If I sat down with her she would just lick my arm or whatever over and over again for like an hour. She was crazy.

Because they love you. They want to show that by licking you. I guess it means you are feeding the right amount and taking on lots of walks. You are a good person. -Lauren (BFF)

they are grooming you or kissing you. -Drever_dog

It's mostly for the salt on your skin. But is also a social recognition thing. From that taste they can tell who you are, where you have been and what you were doing.
