Hi, I'm beginning my search for a dog but have no idea what kind I should get. I've never had a dog before so this is all very new to me. I'm hoping some of you out there can advise me on a small dog. I live in an apartment so I'm trying to be realistic. Luckily for the puppy and me I have the ability to bring it to work with me. He can play in the office, so I don't have to worry about leaving him home hours on end!!
That being said here is some of the criteria I want in a dog. Again, I'm new to being a dog owner and I'm trying to pick a breed that's practical for me.

I want:
-a small dog (one that I can transport in a car easily)
- a dog that isn't a yapper. (I know all dogs bark from time to time)
- a dog to cuddle with. I'm home alone alot and I want a buddy:
- a dog who is on the mellow side yet is somewhat active.
Anyone who has any advise on a breed please feel free to comment!

Thank YOU:)

Just curious, I just came across a poster board in my neigbordhood advertising "weagles" for sale. They are part weimaraner and part beagle. I had never heard of this term nor seen a price tag of 2500 dollars before. I have a weim, and am not interested in a new dog nor was I going to purchase I was just curious if anyone has a Weagle or heard of them before?

He is my mothers dog and is around 10 yrs old. He is currently eating Purina Veterinary Diets - DCO.....$40 something a 20lb. bag. First ingredient (with out a doubt) CORN!!!! Now i personally know there is darn good dog food out there and some of it is even cheaper. (IE: Timberwolf, Orijen, Merrick, EVO,) I dont care what brand it is i just need to find my little buddy something better than this prescription corn. Unfortunately i cannot go changing my mothers life, if i could he would eat raw so that is out of the question but i know everyone is going to say that is what i should do.....well, up front NO RAW! if i can find SOMEONE who knows of a dry food that will keep his sugar levels in control. He does take an injection twice a day. Also, canned pumpkin as an added "good fiber" is this beneficial to diabetes? (i know it is beneficial for other dogs but i dont know what it would do for diabetes) if you have any questions ask them...i'll add on

I was walking him and had stopped by and talked to a neighbor and my dog would not sit next to me he would sit a little back from me andsit in the street and cower.

I think he does that because he is afraid of men. My brother has been mean to him(has kicked him(yelled at him, kicked his crate) I tell him not to but he don't listen.

How can I get my dog Duke not to be scared of men and to know that all men aren't that way and only my brother is?

Thanks!

I just got my 6 month old miniature schnauzer puppy, Daisy, spayed. I was wondering, what can she NOT do? How much should I feed her each day? When can that E-collar ( round, white collar) come off?

In a world where most dogs are pets and no longer do much beyond sit on the couch, why is it important to maintain coat quality (texture, weather resistance etc), temperament (guarded, aloof, friendly etc), structure, working aptitude and ability, color, dentition, size etc???

For example if a dog wanted to get into a room but it cant and you open the door or if they are trying to retrieve a toy from under a sofa and you get it for them. Are they grateful for it?

I have a yorkie that is 6 years old. She was just diagnosed with renal failure yesterday. Her temperature is very low. She just lays around. She will eat only wet food and water and I have to feed it to her. She has puppies that are 5 weeks old. I am very confused as to what to do. Should I put her to sleep now or how long should I give her before putting her down? This is the hardest decision I have ever had to make.

We did a pet survey for my Girl Scout troop and to my surprise, several of the girls in my troop said that they don't give their dogs rawhide chews because they were dangerous or bad for them. None of them knew why though. So now I'm very curious, esp. because I do give them to my dog occasionally.

My cocker is 2 years old. He is AKC registered, but neutered. I have no interest in showing him or breeding him. He was purchased strictly as a pet because I love the breed. He comes from a very reputable breeder, who actually would not sell him to me as anything other than pet quality, but she did give me his paperwork to fill out and send in. I haven't done it. The paperwork is still in my nightstand drawer. Is there any real need to, considering I'm not breeding or showing? I know he's purebred, so does it matter if his registration papers get updated?

This question is directed more towards breeders...
As a breeder.. I breed for quality! I research..do health testing..and try my best to do things the right way...
When I breed.. I do not just turn them loose together and let them go at it like rabbits.. I want to know when they bred and how many times

When they are pregnant.. I hope for a small healthy litter (4-6)... enough for me to make my choices and place the remaining in homes...
it makes it easier on the mom...they normally have enough milk with smaller litters... and it is easier to spend time working with your puppies and making sure they are developing properly... and..the most important thing..you do not have tiny sickly babies
I know even with one breeding you can have 14 pups...but with more breedings you are more likely to have more pups.

So do you prefer a small litter or a large litter?

so far I have had 3 litters
litter 1 had 1 puppy
litter 2 had 4 puppies
and my current litter..5 puppies

I have 2 dogs, they are weimaraners I love me dogs dearly but my husband has issues with them being dirty and licking their privates and we have had many fights about the dogs, I would really like for them to be in the house I would train them and such. But he will not budge, on the issue. They do have good insulated dog houses and plenty of food water and attention I would rather spend time out there with them. they are taken for walks daily and I am out there playing with them all the time. I feel bad for them If I had my way (which I don't ) They would be inside. I am not sure how to get him to budge on the issue I live in CA right now. Southern. I am gonna try to get his mom to talk with him when we go home to visit them for christmas. there should be some type of compromise right? any way thanks .
