He is my mothers dog and is around 10 yrs old. He is currently eating Purina Veterinary Diets - DCO.....$40 something a 20lb. bag. First ingredient (with out a doubt) CORN!!!! Now i personally know there is darn good dog food out there and some of it is even cheaper. (IE: Timberwolf, Orijen, Merrick, EVO,) I dont care what brand it is i just need to find my little buddy something better than this prescription corn. Unfortunately i cannot go changing my mothers life, if i could he would eat raw so that is out of the question but i know everyone is going to say that is what i should do.....well, up front NO RAW! if i can find SOMEONE who knows of a dry food that will keep his sugar levels in control. He does take an injection twice a day. Also, canned pumpkin as an added "good fiber" is this beneficial to diabetes? (i know it is beneficial for other dogs but i dont know what it would do for diabetes) if you have any questions ask them...i'll add on

He is at ideal weight.

Did i mention i was looking for OTHER options, not prescription food. I not a vet hater, i am a commercialization hater. I understnad these foods "regulate" diabetes but they have no nutrition and are full of fillers, wheat corn and crap which is setting him up for liver failure or something. So no more w/d i/d crap....i know what it is and i dont want it!

My mom has a diabetic 11 year old Maltese and she feeds him Timberwolf with no problems at all. And Timberwolf is the same price pound for pound as what she is feeding, but it is one of the highest quality foods on the market.

I don't know what variety of Timberwolf she is feeding, I can find out for you if you would like to know. Email me if you are interested.

Added: Okay, I called my mom and she said that she feeds the Ocean Blue variety because it is grain free but still a normal protein level. The Wild & Natural is also grain free but it is a high performance food with way too high a protein level for dogs that aren't super active.
She said that her vet thought the other varieties would be fine as well since Timberwolf is not grain heavy at all, BUT she felt he did so well on Ocean Blue that she didn't want to mess with it, but that doesn't mean you can't try to rotate the different varieties if you wanted to try it.
I feed my dogs Timberwolf and rotate through all of them but you may want to start with the ocean blue.
Good Luck!

I'm a 45 year old woman and was recently diagnosed as being a borderline diabetic. My doctor prescribed some medication, but before filling it I decided to do some research on the internet which led me to the methods. After reading this ebook and applying the methods, my scepticism turned to 100% belief. I noticed that my energy levels increased significantly and I felt more rested in the morning, my symptoms started going away.

I am very happy to tell you that I have been feeling better than I have felt in years and my doctor informed me that he will be taking me off my prescriptions if I keep this up.

I recommend you use the Type 2 Diabetes Destroyer to naturally reverse your diabetes.

With the newer types of insulin these days, diabetic diets aren't necessarily as restrictive as they used to be. Read here https://tr.im/vhPA3
As with any medicine or diet change, you should discuss it with your doctor. Fruits, both fresh and dried, have a natural sugar in them that will raise blood sugar levels, so be careful about eating too much. Not sure about the nuts. Moderation is always the key. I've been diabetic for 18 years and just recently changed insulin types. I love it because it gives me more freedom in when and what I eat.

Diabetic dogs, I've had one in my 20+ years "in" dogs. At first we fed her Science Diet WD which isn't all that different from the Purina DCO. She just didn't like it. So we switched to the canned WD. No go. Didn't like it. So, the really important thing with a diabetic dog is this:
They HAVE to eat in order to be given their insulin AND
They need exercise in order to help level out their blood sugar.
So, when I asked my vet what was more important: that she eat or that she eat WD. He said it was most important that she eat something because unless she does, she cannot have her insulin. Enter Pedigree canned foods. I bought her a couple of Pedigree varieties and guess what? She loved them! Would wolf them down! So for 6 years we fed her Pedigree canned food from the grocery store. I tried to pick those that were higher in fiber (senior) but over the long haul she ate just about every variety of Pedigree canned on the market. Sadly we lost her last year at age 12. She was diabetic half her life. Ultimately she had pancreatic cancer that was her down fall. But she was a happy Pedigree pooch for a very long time.

Whatever dog food you buy for this dog, the first thing you need to do is make sure it is a high protein food with no sugar in it. Bland is better. It's been a while since we had our diabetic minpin, but we asked our vet what ingredients we should be looking for, got a list, and went out and read dog food bags. We ended up with something that had no fillers or by products, so i would go for the holistic brands.

We feed our diabetic patients Hills m/d, or w/d if they're overweight. We have great success on stabilising them with this - some can even been managed on m/d alone. Is the dog overweight at all? Getting a dog down to ideal weight can resolve diabetes altogether.
