My dog would do that and play with that one piece, tossing it around and having a great time. When I came near him, he would gobble it up as if to say "Game over."

Though it may be some food guarding issues since he was once a stray and had to scavenge for food, I think mostly it's just to have something to play with.

I have no idea, but my dog does it too.

Every time we feed her, she takes 2-4 kibbles and places them on the edge of the carpet and refuses to ever eat them. We call it her "offering to the Carpet Gods".

If your pup only eats when you get close, she may have food guarding issues. Make sure very now and then you take her food away when she's in the middle of eating. Don't give it back until she's calm. She has to know you are leader and food is given at your whim. Always give it back, but she has to be calm to get it.

But if it's just the one kibble, well, dogs are strange.

Yorke's are just jerks.

No he's playing a game with you. He's actually invented a game just to entertain you. You should be very proud of him for his brilliance. Play his game and watch him change the rules.

Our heeler will create games and every time you plan the game he changes the rules to his favor. If you don't play right he will put away the toy and go back into the house.

A few days ago he was trying to teach our cocker how to play soccer.

my yorkie does that. You get near her and she eats it real quick just so I don't get it. haha. She'll also bring it to the middle of the floor, bounce around and play with it and bark at it, then decide she wants to eat it. haha. Very entertaining.
Gotta love the yorkies!

He's just being silly I think. My Yorkie does the same thing. Yorkie's have a good since of humor to be sure! :)

He's pretending to "hunt". Dogs (all dogs) originally came from wild dogs. They were bred specifically for looks, personality, etc. But they are still animals, with instincts.

He's waiting to see if it will move, so he can chase it, lol.

Small dogs don't see food as food, they see it as treasure. Big dogs gobble, little ones often take it from the bowl and eat it somewhere else, or play with it...

Another one of life's mysteries!

Maybe he's just saving it for later? I have no idea. But it sounds cute...though I'm sure you're more annoyed by it at this point than anything else.

i think he's trying to test you to see if he can trust you...
try eating some of his kibbles and then see if he gobbles them all down before you can get them

My pomeranian mix does the exact same thing, I don't know why she just does. Dogs have their own personality.
