I was walking him and had stopped by and talked to a neighbor and my dog would not sit next to me he would sit a little back from me andsit in the street and cower.

I think he does that because he is afraid of men. My brother has been mean to him(has kicked him(yelled at him, kicked his crate) I tell him not to but he don't listen.

How can I get my dog Duke not to be scared of men and to know that all men aren't that way and only my brother is?

Thanks!

I have told my brother to stop but he don't listen to me I tell my mother but she takes his side.

My dog is not leaving me. I will do whatever I can at home with my dog with me.

Btw my brother is 33.

sometimes my brother is nice to them but other times not. Is it because my brother is Bi-polar that he is mean to him sometimes and sometimes not.

Like sometimes he'll be petting them and then tell them to go away.

I don't ever tell my dogs to go away. When I pet them I let them make the decision to stay or go away.

As long as Ur bro is is in his presence he will be that way..
he is a very insecure dog..
he does not know when or when not someone is going to lash out at him..
so he is not willing to take any chances..
anyone or any animal would be the same way..

it has nothing to do with socialization.. he cowards down because he is a coward..

that should makes sense.

Once u move from there.. and make him feel secure that no one is going to ever hurt him again..
u will find he is a totally different dog..
more out going..

the chewing and etc will stop.. that is out of nervous habit..
good luck, happy holidays..
poor duke...

A long time with a bipolar brother kicking him. Protect him as long as you can and pray for the day when you don't have to live around your brother. It's sad for your dog but your dog knows your brother as well as you do and doesn't trust him either. That's the breaks. Love your dog as much as You can.
I would knock my brother into next week but not if he is really bipolar because he will take it out on your dog. Your dog is smart enough to know what's going on and tries to avoid getting hurt. Maybe a friend could babysit your dog when you have to be gone.

it is called socialization. puppies at a yound age should be around all types of people so that they dont develop a fear of strangers. if your brother is the only man he has been around and he constantly abuses him then he will always have this behavior. why are you allowing something like that to happen? first thing you need to do is keep your dog away from your brother if he insists on doing all of that.

EDIT. well if that is how it is then there is nothing you can do. as long as your brother abuses the dog, nothing will change. you have said no to all the answers given and everyone so far has been right.

Your dog may always have this fear.

If your brother is abusing your dog, you need to tell someone. It is against the law (and completely unethical) to physically abuse any animal.

Kicking the dog is not going to get him to do anything- it will only scare him into being worse than he was before. Educate your brother please. Until then, find a place where your dog can live safely and free of fear.

As long as one guy mistreats him, he'll always be afraid. You have to get your brother to respect the dog.

It just takes time, you have gradually, just help the dog, its almost as if a baby were afriad of its blanket, or someting, you have to ween it back into whatever it is afriad of. Good luck!
