I have a yorkie that is 6 years old. She was just diagnosed with renal failure yesterday. Her temperature is very low. She just lays around. She will eat only wet food and water and I have to feed it to her. She has puppies that are 5 weeks old. I am very confused as to what to do. Should I put her to sleep now or how long should I give her before putting her down? This is the hardest decision I have ever had to make.

kidney disease can be slowed down and symptoms helped but once damage is done its irreversable, so it depends on how bad she is right now.

dogs and cats can live years without pain and a good quality of life after diagnosed with kidney disease with the treatmenst below. it depends on how early you caught it.

you have to judge how her quality of life is. Kidney disease causes nausea and disorientation. she may walk around like she's drunk. You can always start treatment, and if she doesn't respond, then at least you tried your best and know its time to put her to sleep.

five things you can do to help her:
1. IV and sub-q fluids. She may need to get a 24-48 hr hospitalization of IV fluids. you can do the sub-q at home every other day or depends on how bad she is. The fluids will help her kidneys flush out the toxins. After a hospitalization the dog usually shows sign of improvement immediately. If there is none, theres really no more you can do.

2. kidney medications. My dog was on calcitrical and azodyl capsules.

3. blood pressure med/beta blocker. The toxins in the kidneys cause high blood pressure.

4. change of food. Canned is great because it gives more water. it should also be low phosphorus and low protein (the low protein is for her to feel better, it may or may not help the actual kidney disease slow down)

5. Steroids. these can help increase her appetite and give her energy.

EDIT: holy crap. I cant believe you did all that research on yahoo answers...and you bred your dog. ...you know. You are as bad as the lab workers that purposely make healthy puppies have kidney disease or remove a kidney so they can study them for dog food. SHAME ON YOU. Bred your dog just to give away the puppies..when somany in shelters..and made your dog die about 10 years earlier than she normally would have. At least she wont be bred by you anymore. Too bad there are no laws for preventing stupid people from even having dogs.

I'm so sorry for your little yorkie. If her pups are 5 wks. old, they can be weaned off completely. This will take a lot of the strain off her.
Then talk to your vet about your options for treatment and improving her quality of life.
My rule of thumb with my dogs has always been that as long as I see the spark in the eye and a fighting spirit, I will do whatever I can to give them some great last days.
But when the spark starts to fade and the bad days outnumber the good, then you know it's getting close.
Just make every moment count and do whatever you can and are able to do to make her life as good as possible. How nice that she has 'kids' to help keep her memory alive when the time finally does come.
Bless you both!!

6 is old for a dog to be having puppies in the first place. Whatever she is too sick to be taking care of pups. You will have to take over now. Thankfully they are almost old enough to be fully weaned.

Renal faliure is very hard on them. I lost a dog to it myself. It depends on the degree on whether she should be put down or not. I'm sure the pregnancy and whelping will have made things much worse, but you need to talk to your vet.

Fluid treatments can help a lot if it's not too advanced. Go over the blood tests with your vet and discuss the BUN and Creatinine levels. If they are very high it's well advanced. Discuss the quality of life your dog can expect with treatment.

Several things can cause kindey faliure. It's always irriversable. As I said fluid treatments may help if it's in the early stages, along with a strict diet, but it seems as if it's pretty advanced. No doubt the pregnancy will have made things a lot worse.

The vet is the one to give you the best advice. It's hard, very hard to decide what to do, but you have to put the dog first.

I think I would also be asking if there was any way the pups could be affected by this too because unless the ***** got into some sort of poison I would imagine this was all going on before she was bred as it seems in advanced stages so the toxins in her blood may have crossed to the puppies. I don;t know if this is possible, but it may well be. If it is you will need to inform any potential buyers for the pups that there maybe a problem with them too.

Edit: I have just consaulted a very qualified vet tech friend of mine and she confirmed the puppies could be affected so you need to get them checked out too.

I see the thumbs down fairies don;t agree, but I AM right!

My vet told me that when you have a pet who is that ill and there is no treatment the humane thing to do is have them out to sleep. He also said to make a list of three things that my dog really enjoyed to do and when she stopped doing them then it was time to have her put to sleep. You might want to do that, but in the end putting her to sleep is the nicest thing you can do that way she doesn't have to suffer anymore. As for her puppies, at 5 weeks old they should be eating a little on their own so they should be fine without her. I know that this is a very difficult and sad time in your life and for that I am truly sorry. I hope everything goes ok for you in the future.

This is why people like you shouldn't breed their dogs. And besides she's already 6.. thats too old! I hope those pups go to the right homes. Did you ever consider the fact of how tiny they are? and how easy it is to hurt them? Did you ever think of that? and their safety?.. Or are you just concerned about the money that you will be making off of them? You should have got your dog fixed a long time ago. Now shes about to die... good luck.

Hello:

I am very sorry to hear your Yorkie has bee diagnosed with renal failure, this is very hard for me to say and you to hear, but i think you know what has to be done. As far as her puppies go, get a milk supplement from a pet store it is very easy to use its mixed with water, try letting them lick it from a bowl, if that does not work get an eye dropper or a syringe from your vet without the needle and feed them like that. Did you not notice the dog was sick before you bred her? You owe it to your Yorkie girl to try and feed the babbies. Good luck

I got an idea for ya.. You take her to the vet and you have her taken care of properly. How come you bred your old dog? Why would you be confused?? You are a breeder aren't ya?? you should have the answers.. You knew all about breeding your litter.. Do the right thing and have her treated. There should be no decision, she was good enough to breed, she is good enough to treat.

You need to talk to your vet first. Your vet may know what might be best and there could be meds to help that. Talk to the vet about putting her down and decide from there. I am truly sorry and I hope it works out well for the both of you and her pups! Good luck!

This is very hard and very sad, but if you love your dog you will do whats best for it. She is suffering as you can see. Let her rest and take her in. If you can do it, you have the choice to go in with her and comfort her during it. Its quick and painless. And with you there she wont be alone and you can say goodbye. I have to say I did this with a cat and its the saddest thing I ever had to do. So if you cant do it have someone else go in with her. Just so she isn't alone.

This is hard and I'm sorry but it's best to have her put down now. I'm sure with her being on meds the pups can't nurse from her.
This is something that is just goiong to get worse it is more humane to let her out of her suffering.
Here is a poem that may help

PUT ME TO REST

Time to let me go my friend,
Because my life no-one can mend,
Its better to let me go this way,
Than watch me suffer night and day.

I'm happy to go, my time has come,
My quality of life is no longer fun,
Ive been so ill, so its not a bad thing,
To let me go forever resting.

Stay with me till I drift away,
Fast asleep forever I pray,
To relieve me from suffering and pain,
What more can I ask from my best friend.

Don't be sad, I'll be free from pain,
Never to be ill ever again,
I know you'll miss me being there,
But all the memories you have to share.

Thankyou for being my best friend,
And all my needs that you did tend,
Try not to be sad, try not to cry,
Now's the time to say GOODBYE PUT ME TO REST
