Usually not. As much as I love pit bulls, I wouldn't feel right telling you that "Yeah! They're perfect for everyone!" when in fact, this is not the case.

APBT's tend to be very high energy, and they need lots of exercise. If they do not get the required amount of exercise, they will release their frustration by chewing, digging, barking excessively, and not being obedient. Although this is the case with most unexercised dogs, because the APBT needs so much exercise, it is more likely to happen. Also, if not raised by an experienced dog owner, they can become frustrated and out of control. Don't get me wrong, they are very intelligent dogs, but if you are a first time dog owner, then you would probably be better off with a dog that would be smaller and easier to control. If you raise your APBT incorrectly, and he has any behavioral problems at all, people will quickly deem him as a dangerous monster. Even if your neighbor has a beagle with the same problems, people will be much quicker to judge your APBT. Also, pit bulls are very strong, and require a strong owner who has researched the breed A LOT so that they know exactly how to handle any situation. You also need to make sure you understand dog behavior so that you know exactly what your dog is doing and why.

Long story short-
Pit bulls are GREAT dogs, but not for everyone, and probably not good for a first time owner.

EDIT*

However, if you put in enough research ahead of time, make sure you understand the breed, and know that you have enough time to properly train it, then there is a possability it could be a good first dog. But you have to have tons of time to work with him, determination, and you'll probably have to put in quite a bit of effort.

I depends on how much time your willing to devote to learning how to care for pit bulls, and if you also have a lot of time for training and attention. Pit bulls, in a sense, are no different from other bully breeds, in the way they crave attention. Their very affectionate and need to be around you. They don't do well at all just put in the back yard, without attention.

Pit bulls have a high desire to please people. So that makes them incredibly easy to train. Our pit bull Tank, is a trained therapy dog. We go to our children's hospital, and retirement homes. He's always had a knack for tuning out distractions, so he made a perfect therapy dog. He knows the difference in the times he needs to work, and the times he can let loose.

All a pit bull owner needs to do, is have a willingness to learn, and devote time their dog. So if you can accomplish this, I don't see where there would be a problem. Now if you wanted a boarboel or a Caucasian mountain dog, I would say first time owner, no experience, no way. Those dogs will never see you as the alpha, only an equal. However, you can learn how to take care of a pit bull easily. The secret to a happy life with a pit bull is training, and devotion.

It depends. If you would like a pit bull you MUST do as much research on the breed as possible. Understanding the breed is just the first step! My first dog was a Yorkie, which is 3 years old now. I was very clueless about owning a dog but I did a lot of research and asked my vet TONS of questions. About 8 months ago we fell in love and rescued a pit bull. In the week of waiting for application to be processed I did TONS of research so that I understood the breed. Any breed of dog you decide to get you really do need to research. Make sure you are prepared to commit to this dog until the day they die. I would recommend going to a rescue or shelter. You will feel much better about yourself knowing you saved his/her life!

Good Luck! Below I'm posting the best website I've ever found about pit bulls!

Pit bulls are a very powerful, very strong, and very strong-willed breed. They need to be raised with a firm hand, by owners who understand and can easily practice plenty of socialization from puppyhood so that there dog will be friendly with other people and animals. It would be difficult for a first-time owner to handle a pit bull, though there are always exceptions. To get more information on pit bulls, check out this link: http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/americanpitbull.htm.
The website www.dogbreedinfo.com has great information on all sorts of breeds, and a breed selector quiz that can help you find the breeds that will suite your lifestyle.

If you are set on a pit bull, maybe you could rescue a pit bull from a shelter that you know will not give you trouble, perhaps an older pit or a pit bull mix. A great site to check out dogs in need of adoption is www.petfinder.com.

Remember, the key to getting the perfect dog is to research, research, and research! Good luck, and I hope this helps you!

If you had a lot of time to devote to training and socializing the dog as well as some kind of mentor familiar with the breed who could give you tips and assist you when needed, it's possible. Pit bulls (or any other dog type, for that matter) are not for everyone.

And, since you didn't mention, if this would be your first dog and you have kids or plan on it soon, I would not recommend this particular breed. So, don't let anyone tell you NO without explanation, it's not a definite no, but there's certainly some effort required on your part. Good question.

I by no ability carry my pit bull to the dogs park or any doggie day care. he's unquestionably socialized and we've even fostered yet another dogs in our residing house and that they have been given alongside fantastic. i do no longer think of each pit bull is going to be dogs aggressive yet those are the justifications I save him out of the dogs park/ doggie day care and don't leave him on my own with different animals ever: a million. you're good, if some thing have been to take place, it may well be his fault whatever actual occurred 2. he's barely a three hundred and sixty 5 days previous and dogs aggression can pop out as previous due as 18 months to 2 years previous. 3. pit bulls have been bred for blood activities and any accountable proprietor will save this in strategies notwithstanding how completely behaved their dogs has been interior the previous, because of the fact it could continuously substitute. i'm a extensive recommend for the breed and love mine to loss of existence, even though it is so important for the breed's photograph that they be responsibly owned and in my opinion, this contains play with different canines being a hundred% supervised continuously in a extra controlled putting than a dogs park.

I guess I am going to buck the trend. First off I am not a dog owner, they are part of my family, our pack. Then you love them, just as you love your kids or your mom, if not don't get one.
It does not make any difference what kind of dog you get as your first dog.
First thing you have to do is research and learn what it is to have a dog, any dog. You have to learn to teach them who is going to be the alpha dog, that's you. You are putting together a pack and there is a pecking order. You do want to make sure you are dominant as is the rest of the family. The dog has to be at the bottom. You will have to teach them that.
Do your research before you get any dog. Learn how you are going to train them. You can always take them to classes.
Once you have done that you are set to go.
After you have done your research you will find dogs are not that hard to train.
As far as an APBT you could not get a better dog. They are so people friendly and lovable. They love everyone and are great with children. I guess that is why they are called "The Nanny Dog".
I have two of the most lovable Pits in the world.

Not really...they are a breed that needs a well educated (on the breed and ALL its traits) owner. If you knew everything a prospective pit Parent needs to know you wouldn't need to ask this. Do some research and if the Pit is right for you, you'll have NO PROBLEM finding one. Good luck and please read up on the dog first....

No. Not unless you can be the dominant owner that they require, and Im not saying mean, just dominant. They are not the only breed that a first time owner should not have. Im not saying cant. They are really wonderful and sweet dogs, but not for everyone. Those dogs need TONS of training, patience and more training. So in a nutshell? Not for a novice.

I agree with the second reply! A dog's behavior or attitude is based on the owners ability to teach and train them. I've had pit bulls growing up and there was never a problem. When you get them as puppies, you have the ability to mold them into a great dog! Start them off with puppy class.
