I am feeding my new puppy Chicken Soup for the Puppy Lover's Soul right now. He seems to like it but is there a better food out there? Can I feed him Innova or California Natural? I do not know what breed he is or even if he will be small or big when he grows up. He is 4 months old.

Judge doesn't seem comfortable around some people and I'm not always sure why. But today my friend was over and messing around. He was stomping around while my dog was sitting on my lap and staring at my guinea pig so he gave a snarl in his direction. It was a warning. My friend backed away and obviously left him alone. Later though, I was petting Judge when my friend came over and gave him a hug, and he bit him!!! I don't understand why. Maybe he felt unsure? Or maybe it was because we walked over to his house before to say hi to his chocolate lab and Judge didn't like her, and my friend smelled like her. I don't know. Luckily it wasn't a bad bite but he had aimed for the face, and although I couldn't see any mark my friend said he was bleeding a little on the chin. I am so scared for my dog. He's not a mean one, but perhaps he finally is sure that he has a home after being abandoned by others twice and wants to protect it?

Help please, I don't want him to bite again!

I have adopted a beautiful Shetland Sheepdog. He is 8 months old and has had past history of being abused. I don't know how to make him trust me. He is very shy. He walks around the house with his tail in between his legs. He is skittish, any slight sound will make him jump. When I reach out to pet him he freezes and gets scared. Whenever I go up to him, he crawls in the corner and gets upset. It breaks my heart. When I call him he won't come to me. He is very smart, but most of the time he will hide under my bed or couch. One time he got in a small hole to get underneath my house. I couldn't get him out, until he got hungry and needed food. I don't know what to do. He won't trust me. I have worked with him, but he still holds on to the past.

My new vet gave us a panflect* that has a guide for dogs. It read that dog's are to be dewormed 4 times a year, the same exact guide for cats. Now the vet who gave me this guide told me to bring her back next year for her shots, she comes yearly for shots now. This is what my old vet told me too, yearly. So? wth? How many times do you deworm your pet?

10 months old, 70-80 lbs. She's not skinny, but she's not quite the giant that I heard she was going to be.

OK, I left a question about how I could adopt a small dog and got many replies about how I am going to care for this dog I want. I guess I should have been a bit clearer for goodness sakes. Yes I have limited income but I still do have an income and can take care of an animal. What I meant is that I cannot afford a whopping $2000! I can buy food, shots and whatever else the animal needs AND I can only get a small dog because I am currently at my Mother's to care for her (she is elderly). I have discussed this with her and we agreed on a small dog. SO w/o everyone thinking I am LAZY, which was previously implied, All I wanted to know is WHERE to get a good small dog for cheap. The shelters rarely have small dog since I have been on my look out. I will try petfinders.com. Thanks to all those who were 'NICE' with their replies. :-). Its not nice to assume someone cant afford to do something just because they don't have TONS of money.

Is it really necessary to give my dog heartguard every month? The vet insists on it but they are always looking for ways to make money. My parents only gave my other dogs heartguard in June and July when it was more likely to occur. Opinions???

I just want to know how the incision looked for the first few days, if you have went through this procedure with your dog.

Buddy had his eye removed yesterday, and the vet told me that she would leave an area unsutured for it to drain.
Today I've been researching more on the subject on the internet....and I've read that some vets put in a draining tube.

Our vet left an area approx 1/2" long opened at the very front where the eyelids meet.
How do most vets do this if you know?
Curious.
Here's Buddy recovering yesterday:

My boyfriend and i just bought a new townhouse and I am exctied that I will be able to get my very own cat when we move in next month. However, My sister is going to be living with us for a while and she just bought a teacup chihuahua. Now I am afraid to get a cat when thats what i really want. Do you think a cat would think a chihuahua was a mouse and try to attack him? Do you think it would be best to get a kitten instead of a cat thats already full grown? Do you think that the chihuahua will try to attack a kitten? I dont know this stuff because i never had a dog before so someone who has been in a similar situation please help me out!

I understand that there is the "cuteness" factor, but people are paying $1000+ for a MUTT!

Are people just so ignorant that they are willing to shell out that much for a dog that will have who knows what kind of personality, health problems, etc.

The one I do understand are the hypoallergenic dogs that allow people with allergies to have dogs.

Someone please give me a theory as to why people will shell out so much money for a mutt!

Ok all - we have seen it hundreds of times on here - people buying their pure-bred golden, dobie, bulldog, etc. I want anyone familiar with breeding simply to list their breed and ballpark price of a puppy.

I know - it's a little personal. But with Christmas coming up - and people on the "hunt" for a purebred dog and thinking that it's AKC registered, it must be good - to know - really - what is the price of a well-bred dog.

Maybe that will make people think - hey - why is this puppy in the petstore only $200.00.

You want quality- you gotta pay for it. So let's see what you SHOULD be expected to pay for a dog from a breeder.
