Dogs that are brushed regularly and are free of parasites need very few baths. Bathing a dog too frequently will actually strip the coat of its protective oils, and cause an over production of those oils. That can cause the dog to have a stronger smelling coat. A quick solution for a dirty dog is instant dry shampoo or pre-moistened wipes. These clean off surface dirt and doggy odor until you can bathe your canine friend..

To begin with You never said what the dogsbreed is,,,soIts impossible to say, I think the stupidest answer here was Because I hate the wet dog smell, I bath the dog( getting it wet and making it smell worse) .. Duh ,,,. some breeds have Heavy natural oils that protect the skin, such as labs Keepiing them out ofthe water is rediculous suincethey were bred as water dogs, the oils and fur protects the skin, bathing too often Drys the skin making it Flakey and itcghy and creatring problems other breeds have double coats to protect them from cold and weather and again, Oils in the coat and skin are the protection...for the dogs skin.. If the dog Rolls in crap every day then rinse itand soap up the areas that are "dirty"./..next time the dog comes to a pile itwiull roll again.. Dogs do this to Mask they're scent (specially Foofy garbage that you will think is nice he will hate.. again this is most breeds ... Washing them More then monthly will prolly lead to wasted money , wasted water and wasted time on your part, I've had My dog 12 years and have Given her a bath/hosing with Pet soap all of about 6 times , and Paid to have her groomed 2 times Usually the groomer only does her nails and thats only rarely, since she gets out and wears her nails down. She is a Long haired mixed Breed, very much like an american eskimo or samoyeed mix fluffy and she is brushed daily, brushing her with an assortment of tools makes her coat so fluffy and clean, That when youpet her the natural lanolin moistureizes your hands .... again Its dependant mainly on breed and activities ,, I'veknown ownerswho havebeen forced tobath the dog dailyDue , again to mud orworsestuff that they allow the dog toget intio too.. Use What God gave you (your head and check out what Your breed says should be done) and cutit in half and normally you will be good, for touch ups in between Baths use pet whipes to touch up dust , dirt or accidents....

How often your pet will need a dog bath will depend on the breed and what type of activities the dog is involved in. It’s best to bathe your dog only when your dog is really dirty.
Just use your nose – that tell tale doggy smell will let you know it’s time for a dog bath. If a dog is bathed too often the skin may be stripped of its natural, protective oils. This will result in dry itchy skin, which will cause your dog to scratch, further irritating the already sensitive skin.

I agree with Bindi.
My dogs get a bathe usually once per year. Other than that its just regular brushing and I have 5 labrador retrievers who love to get dirty.
The only time they get in additional bath is if they get into something exceptionally nasty.
Less bathing more brushing. Brushing encourages the natural oils in their coat to "come out" so to say to help keep their coat healthy.
If you have just one dirty spot or one smelly spot, you take a warm wet face cloth and "spot" clean them if you feel it necessary, that way they don't require a full bath.
Also, do not use human products on dogs, because they are not formulated for their coats. It is important to get doggie shampoos at your pet store or even Wal-Mart.
Human shamppos/conditioners and body washes, etc., can do more harm to your dogs skin and coat than good.
If you have any questions as to what to bathe your dog with or any skin and coat problems, contact your veterinarian. A simple free phone call can solve many problems easily, effectively, and like I said, free.
Congratulations on your new puppy!

well, for a puppy it is crucial to bathe it at least 1 time in a week, due to the growing of the entire animal, and how dogs can be outside for hours, the more bath's the better. that is just an old wise tale about getting hard fur, and if it were true, since dogs are shedding 20 hairs per minute, they would be replaced with soft new dead skin cells. If your puppy is inside most of the time, you can wait longer between baths. think of your dog as you, would you go more than 2 days without showering? probably not, but for dogs, the "cooling" system within itself lets the dog pant more then sweat, but never-the-less, they still do. i hope this answer helped, enjoy your puppy!

The less bathing the better. My own dogs get a bath twice a year, unless they are obviously dirty, or going to a nursing home or dog show.
Overbathing a dog causes dry itchy skin. This can lead to hot spots and skin infections. When you bath your dog you also strip its coat of its natural oils, this puts the dog's skin into oil production overload. This will actually make your dog smell WORSE.
So 2-3 times a year unless obviously dirty is plenty. Daily brushing will keep your dog's skin and coat healty in between.

Dogs do need bathing--more so probably than I normally bathe mine. It the animal is basically a house dog and manageable, I would say every two months. Outdoors--maybe twice a year. And of course, if the dog rolls in stuff, a bath is required as soon as possible.

Definitely not everyday or every week because you will irritate the skin. I bath my Yorkie once a month but she has hair not fur. Ask your vet how long you should wait before you wash your dog. I would recommend ever 1-2 months or when it starts to stink!

You are only supposed to wash your dog 3 or 4 times a year. Over washing ruins their fur, strips the fur of its natural oils and causes itching, dry skin and allergies. Unless they are particularly filthy or smelly, that is all it should be. Or you can give them rinses without using soap, because it's the soap that causes the problems. I know that's not what you want to hear but that is the truth.

I have a shih tzu and Ive been giving him a bath twice a month since I got him. And he goes every six weeks to the groomer. In the summer i usually give him a bath every week cause he rolls around in the dirt.
Just make sure u get a gentle shampoo and conditioner.
