I have chihuahuas, so I know they are under 8". Check akc.org for their breed descriptions. You will find all the breeds under 8" listed there. Animal Planet used to have a link on their site that asked you questions and told you what is the ideal dog for you, so you might want to look that up. Another suggestion is to call the rescue groups in your area, including the pound, and tell them you are looking for an adult dog under 8". They can help keep an eye out for a rescue for you. Whatever you do, NEVER buy from someone advertising a teacup or toy chihuahua. Those do not exist, and the breeder is breeding dogs that are too small to be safely bred. AKC.org will give you more information about which breeds legitimately come in a toy size.

Pomeranians, Yorkshire Terriers, some toy Poodles (think teacup), Chiuhuahua (think Tinkerbell) and my favorite, Maltese. Generally the smaller the dog, unfortunately, the more you will have to pay. I think it's because space is at a premium, so people are now living in tiny boxes in the sky -- people need tiny dogs to fit in these tiny boxes they call condominiums.

If you have owned dogs before I strongly suggest a Pekingese. I love mine. They do have some health problems but this is true with all animals. They are a very sturdy breed, the max weight for AKC is 14 lbs...

We have an adorable, well-behaved long haired chihuahua. He is an absolute joy to have and we love him very much! He is very smart and well trained.
