OK, I left a question about how I could adopt a small dog and got many replies about how I am going to care for this dog I want. I guess I should have been a bit clearer for goodness sakes. Yes I have limited income but I still do have an income and can take care of an animal. What I meant is that I cannot afford a whopping $2000! I can buy food, shots and whatever else the animal needs AND I can only get a small dog because I am currently at my Mother's to care for her (she is elderly). I have discussed this with her and we agreed on a small dog. SO w/o everyone thinking I am LAZY, which was previously implied, All I wanted to know is WHERE to get a good small dog for cheap. The shelters rarely have small dog since I have been on my look out. I will try petfinders.com. Thanks to all those who were 'NICE' with their replies. :-). Its not nice to assume someone cant afford to do something just because they don't have TONS of money.

Question is, where can I find a small dog for little money. YES I can do all the things for a dog that is necessary. WHY I mentioned Paris Hilton before is the fact the she takes the dog everywhere for Christ sakes (that's to the person who mentioned that before) GRR I can believe the backlash I am getting. I am not some idiot off the street. I have 2 children and have owned animals before so I don't need to be commented like I am an idiot. Don't get me wrong, I appreciate the concern but I didn't ask "Hey how can I get reamed by the public because I asked where I could get a small dog for cheap??" Lord help me *smirk*

Being on a limited income does not mean you can't care for your dog. I have noticed that alot of people just decide you are lazy or don't do what you need to do to care for your pet. I have been berated for asking advice here. I was told not to sit on the couch and leave the dog outside and a whole list of things that I don't do and clearly posted. Just ignore them. They all think they know better than everyone else. Take the best advice which was petfinder.com or a local shelter. Leave the others alone. You know you can care for a pet and that's all that matters.

Again, hon, not to offend. Cheap dog is poorly bred. Just go to the shelter and save a nice dog who was abandoned, IF you are certain that you won't take from your budget and hurt yourself financially when the vet bills come rolling in. Again, it can cost up to 2,000 a year to keep a dog, more for people like me who only feed my dog what is good enough for humans. At a shelter, you don't know where your dog came from, but your alternative is supporting a backyard breeder/puppy mill pet store who will not give you a quality animal anyway, and who will in the long run cost you LOADS in vet bills cuz of shabby genes and sickly conditions.

You might want to try some of the rescue organizations for small breeds. These people take purebred dogs and foster them until new owners can be found. They are very thorough, almost like an adoption agency. My daughter got a beautiful and sweet dog from Pennsylvania boxer rescue.

Put up posters........"Wanted small dog"
Ask around, especially at grocery stores.
My community has neighborhood papers where ads are placed for sale, free or wanted. If yours does, that would be a good place to find a small dog.
Tell everyone you meet that you are looking for a small dog.
Word of mouth usually takes awhile, but may come through.

look on craigslist, the newspaper, or any shelters near you, any dog you find in the petstore will likely come from a puppy mill and may not be the dog you wanted, it could also be sick or have any number of problems, and if you get from the shelter the animal is already fixed, healthy, and sometimes even trained, same with craigslist and the newspaper, sometimes you can even find free animals

Well i think your buying pure breed dogs like shih-tzu, Maltese, and other ones i can't seem to think in my head. If you don't care what kind of dog you want but care about the cost, I'd advise you to check mixtures (muts as uncaring people will call them) they may not be pure but at least you'll have a loving companion.

When it comes to shelters, rescues and petfinder, sometimes you have to be willing to wait a short time to find that dog that is right for you. Be patient. Small dogs will and do come along all the time.
