I heard that by adding oil to your dog's food it can help their coat and skin. My dogs is very itchy, I think it is dry skin. I think the oil would hlep but I have no idea what kind of oil it is...my guess Virgin Olive Oil?!

I was reading some other questions/answers on here, and people talked about having a heartworm test done on their dogs before being prescribed preventative. It got me thinking... and I dont think the vet ever gave my dog a heartworm test before giving me Heartguard for her. There was never any mention of the test, and from what I have seen online, the test is done by blood sample and the only time she had blood drawn was when they were seeing if she was ok to go under when she got spayed at 6 months.

I also read online that if heartworm infection is uncommon in your area, they often do not test for it. Is this true?

If not, how much does the test usually cost so I can have it done when I take her to the vet?

I have a full grown 2 year old Alsatian and although he is completely trained and wouldn't hurt a fly whenever people see him they are weary and ask "Oh, is he alright, he doesn't bite does he?"

I just think would we bring him out i public and let him loose in the garden if he was vicious?

I know there are different breeds considered under the title "pitbull", but in general are they good for a novice owner. I've heard they can be dominate and pushy.

My parent's dog is 17 years old. She can't control either her bowels or her bladder. She cannot stand up on her own. She can walk only very short distances before falling down. She is deaf. She has very bad cataracts. She barks and moans constantly. She has neuropathy and can't move her back left leg. Clearly her quality of life is awful. Living in that condition would feel like torture, to me. It seems clear to me that the compassionate thing to do is to let the dog go.

Unfortunately, when I've brought this up to my mother, she puts up a wall and has even refused to respond to my questions. This tells me that she knows she's not being rational. For the life of me, I can't understand her hesitation. The dog is going to die, one way or another. Either you wait and let nature take it's slow, ugly course, or you let the dog pass away quickly and painlessly.

Are there any resources that I can show my parents that will make them really consider their options?

Thanks

I asked a Question a few days ago about my little Yorkshire Terrier Ashtons Ears?
I took him to the breeders Vet to have his shots and check up well they asked me about his ears? Stating that the other pups in the litter had thiers standing already and I took the advice of someone on here and I have taped them
Well the vet asked me why am I am taping them??
I thought that was a dumb question but I answered and he proceeds to tell me that he can cut and bandage them all @ the expense of the breeder... Whoa.... I have no intention of haveing his ears cut I am taping them and I know they are being stubborn to stand on thier own due to teething as on a good day they stand but when his little teeth are bugging him they will flop
I really disagree with what this Vet proposed and I am wondering should I inform the breeder as he was willing to do it rite there without even so much as a phone call to the breeder
Please Help
Thanks In Advance

We've had our puppy for 4 days now. We are very consistent with her when we are home (times for outside potty, walking, playing). My question is this; when she is in her pen at night, how often should I succume to her crying and go to her? She has papers in her pen and does use them, but I don't want her to get into the habit of waking me up 4/5 times a night. However, she is only 9 weeks old, new to my home and I'm sure lonely in her pen by herself. I'm not quite sure what the "normal" thing to do is. Any suggestions?

We just lost our cat and we already have one dog, last year we lost 2 cats and we got another dog but she didnt work out for us so we gave her to some people who wanted her, the reason the dog we gave away didnt work was because she was a puppy and very energetic and I have a young daughter and no time or patience for training, that dog chewed on my outdoor furniture and EVERYTHING in sight, now we only have a dog whom I have had for just over 2 years, he is perfect, nice and quiet, doesn't get aggressive and gets along with all other animals, even lets birds eat out of his food bowl. My husband has been saying we need a new puppy for the last few days and is out looking for one now, when I ask him why he wants one he says because they are fun, he doesn't even play with the dog we already have!! And he isn't the one who will be here all day cleaning up puppy poop and wee off the floor. We are going to try for another child next year and I don't want a puppy! What do I do?

In about two weeks we are getting two kittens (they were not quite ready to go yet). I have two dogs, a 1 year old who is approx 40-50 lbs and a 4 yr old who is approx 40lbs, the 4 year old dog I am not quite worried about as much because she has been here for 4 years and she has been around our other cat (he decided he didn't want to live inside anymore and moved outside! don't worry he's been fixed for 6 years!), but I am worried about my 1 year old male puppy jumping all over the kittens and trying to play and rough house with them, he is generally a very sweet hearted dog, he just doesn't know any better, how can I train him to be gentle/nice and friendly to the kittens? Is this possible? Does anyone have any tips on how to train or go about this situation before or when it comes?

Sorry it's so long, Thanks for all the help!!!

i'm not sure why but i'm very sensitive to presence of any kind of dogs, as long as they're within like 100m from me i'll walk another way or hide. but i've been wanting to keep a chihuahua as a pet. partly because i know it's really small, and to me it doesn't really look like a dog. strange i know, but i won't freak out when i see a chihuahua.

my question is this. i'm afraid to approach a dog, chihuahua or not. how to overcome this? and i really know absolutely nothing about dogs. is there anyone who has a chihuahua and can help me to understand this breed?

also, the chihuahua they sell in my country don't look as pure as say in the States. can i actually import one? but i wouldn't want it to go through a month of quaratine!

appreciate all the help i can get. thanks!

When it was at puppy stage,It was being looked after by my daughter who had to go to office, leaving it alone. Is that the reason for its noisy behavior? What can be done to correct its behavior.

I know Frontline slowly spreads from the application site to the rest of their bodies. Could it be that the fleas are jumping off their backs onto the parts of their bodies that the Frontline hasn't reached yet?

I am thinking about getting a papillon puppy. I'm looking at getting a red and white female. I have a friend that has one, but I want more opinions. Anything and everything that you can tell me would be great. Anything from health to bad habits to best food for them. Thanks!

Obviously that's the point of the vaccination, but is it 100 percent effective?

I just heard on the news that there is a parvo outbreak in Orange County, which is slightly close to me. There were owners lining up to get the vaccinations.

I've never heard of a parvo outbreak and only heard of it in reference to young puppies.

What are the symptoms of a sick dog?
