I think you need to take your dog to another vet. The pooping blood, straining to poop and pee, and crying are not symptoms of diabetes. You should take him right away. He sounds like he's in pain.

This are a few people on here with dogs that have diabetes. There are also some on the yahoo raw feeding group list so maybe join that to ask them questions and gain advice from people experienced with the issues that this disorder can bring..

From what I have heard the best diet for a dog with diabetes is a raw one - this means raw meat, edible bones and offal with NO vegetables and carbohydrates. As dogs are carnivores their bodies cannot cope properly with these foods. Attempting to digest them causes extra pressure on the pancreas. The first article explains all of this more fully.

As the vet taken blood work etc to finalise a diagnosis? The symptoms you described do sound a bit odd. Is there another vet at the practice you could speak with? I hope everything goes well for you and your pup.

If your dog does have diabetes you will be facd with a tough decision.

You will either need to have him euthanased.
OR
You will need to inject him with insulin, possibly twice a day, every day for the rest of his life. And he will need to have regular blood tests to check the dosage is correct etc.

I went through this with my dog (he was 8 at the time) and after 2 months of weekly visits to the vet for hourly blood tests, and injections (which he hated) twice daily, they still couldn't get his dosage correct, and he was getting sicker every day, and never happy. I made the tough decision and had him euthanased.

Go to the dogs breeder. If she is reputable, she may be able to offer you some advice. That is what you pay all the money for. Also, if it is a genetic problem, a reputable breeder will have some sort of health guarantee written in the purchase agreement.

I would take him back to the place you got him and tell him what your vet said. diabetes can be very costly. the place you got him should cover this because he's still a pup.

Take your puppy to see a different vet as soon as possible.
