Chihuahua are snappy dogs, I would not get one if your scared of dogs. A more loyal not as snappy dog is A Cavilier King Charles. Theyalso small dogs. Consider an adult dog from a shelter or pound. Cats are also loyal animals. Never buy from a petstore. Cats might be a better option for you. Border Collies are also normally very loyal and gentle but fit into medium category and Labrador and Golden retrivers although they fit in large.
Shelter/ Pound dogs are temperment tested.

If you're afraid of dogs, other then chihuahuas, how do you plan to socialize your dog? What are you gonna so when it wasn't to say hi to another dog, or you want to take it to a puppy class, for say? socialization is a major part of a dogs life, if there ever comes a time when for some sad reason you believe you can't keep this dog, shelters can't have unsocialized dogs be adopted, and it'd be put down, also, unsocialized dogs are more likely to bit people...Just think about things like that, maybe consider a cat, or fish?

You could go to a shelter and explain your situation that you would like to overcome your fear of dogs. You could volunteer and just hang out with the small puppies/dogs. I'm sure they could help you understand their body language as well which will help with fear if you know what's going on with them. I wouldn't get a dog until you feel completely comfortable with dogs though. Research research research as well. There are several excellent behavior books out there that will help you learn about their behavior and different breeds. The larger breeds may seem more intimidating because of their size but they are generally more laid back than the smaller breeds which can be quite neurotic and snappy so please keep that in mind.

You need to learn how to overcome your fear before getting a dog of your own. Do any of your neighbors or friends own a dog? Try practicing getting close to their dog first so you can feel a little more comfortable. You dont have to touch the dog. Just stand close. Let the dog approach you and sniff of you. Then once you are comfortable with this, practicing this routine for a while then you can try petting. Then if you decide to get a dog whether big or small , please adopt one from a shelter. They deserve a good home.

You can try going to an animal shelter to get used to being around dogs, they're in cages anyway, so the cant touch you. When you get used to them enough to be able to not hide or walk away, then you can get one without worry. And the people at the shelters can answer any questions you have about dogs too. Also, if I were going to get another pet, I would adopt one from the shelter because the more animals that get adopted, the more cages they will have for animals that need them, such as strays.

hey dinogal!....
i think some people forgets what this old phrase means..."dog's are men's best friends."
even if it's a chihuahua or what ever breed it maybe.....
pure or not doesn't make sense at all coz' that's not the solution on your sensitivity on "dog's" presence...
what i think is best for you is to ask some help from a real professional people... a veterinarian/ a dog breeder/ and a freak whose been studying the behaviour of dog's since birth...
well that's too much i think.... and gather only the information you got from them that you think that will help you the most...
that sound like a lot of work,, but it is doable.. and This is the real solution to your problems... good luck!

Forget the dog til you are over the problem.. Go to the shelter and volunteer to spend some time with some dogs.. Go to the dog park and be around dogs.. If you can get over the fear, then think about a dog. You don't want to bring home a dog and find you can't handle it and then need to find the dog a home.

my mom was too ............but when u get a 3 or a4 month old puppy ull slowly get to start liking all the dogs .but one thing for sure u better decide which dog is right for ur way of life.u didn't give ny details of ur life so here is a tip
if u want a chihuahua u better be a lot patient as they are very naughty and are too energetic.
make sure u spend a lot of time together .out doors is always good.
take the advice of breeders to decide as all puppies are good to start with .
but as a personal advice stay away from black dogs except German shepherds and saint bernard..........
good luck

TOO FUNNY!!! Ive been training dogs for years and the Chihuahua is one of the most aggressive little monsters in the world. Not because of the breed. Its because humans want to hide them and baby them and not socialize them like they need. They carry them in purses like they are a wallet and they don't take them anywhere. People are scared to put them in a puppy socialization class in fear that their dog might get trampled. Your puppy will not get killed in a puppy class. He will get the socialization that he needs for a seriously needed self-esteem from not only other dogs of all different sizes, but from lots of different people as well. These are terrific little dogs IF THEY ARE SOCIALIZED!!! That's all.

Dogs can sense fear, so you should get over your fear before getting a dog (any dog)
You could put yourself in situation where dogs are around. Ask friends or family member with pets to let you be around them. Vol. at a shelter a few hrs a week, go to dog parks.
Research ( buy books DVD'S) on dogs or breed of dog you would like to get before getting one.
GOOD LUCK
