He doesn't ever growl at girls, or kids, but when a guy comes over he goes crazy! He was outside and a guy came over to measure windows, and he broke a window out of the door trying to get in.

Even though they weren't specifically bred to be a guard dog they they can be. They will almost always let you know if a stranger comes around by barking and can be protective of the family in certain situations. Although , if your main goal is to get a guard dog then you'll probably want a breed for that specific purpose. There are plenty out there like the german shepherd, rottweiler, doberman .

Black Guard Dogs

I think that if it really came down to it, and someone was physically attacking me or one of my immediate family members, that my dogs would attack the attacker. However, guarding is not the specialty of the black lab. I happen to own three of them and know that they are very playful, loving dogs...rotweilers are more of what you would call a guarding, territorial dog. Black labs will bark at people they don't know, but will most likely play with and lick the person once they are closer. Unless the dog is in a serious situation where their intuitions tell them their owner is in grave danger, I can only see them attacking newcomers with love. =]

A black lab would be a good deterrant as he is going to bark and alert you to strangers etc.. he isn't really going to guard you in the sense that he would save your life from an intruder likely.. It's not impossible, but it's not the breed I would count on to protect my life. Unless maybe I was drowning, or needed a duck retrieved for dinner..

Hi, I understand that you are looking for some advice or resources to help fully train your dog or fix behavior problems. If a professional dog trainer is not an option at this time, or if you want to trt training your dog on your own (a great way to bond), I'd suggest you https://tr.im/ZN0Vs

A friend recommened it to me a few years ago, and I was amazed how quickly it worked, which is why I recommend it to others. The dog training academy also has as an excellent home training course.

Black labs are great hunting dogs and wonderful family pets, but guard dogs they are not. They will probably bark if someone approches the house that it does not know, but as far as attacking someone, I would say not.

My parents had a black lab/shepherd mix and he was a very good guard dog. He had to be penned up when the meter reader or the UPS man wanted to come into the yard. He even bit my ex-husband, who deserved it.

Watchdogs? In the sense that they'll alert you to anyone who approaches your house? Yes, they do.

Guard dogs? In the sense that they'll rip apart or tear to shreds anyone who approaches your house? (Keep in mind that this means the mailman, the Fed-Ex guy, the guy who reads your electric-meter, and the one who checks on the status of your septic-system) Also might mean any little girl selling Girl Scout Cookies, or just some kid selling hoagies for football or band. No, they don't. And, thank heavens they don't!

Decide what you want, and why and whether you need a guard-dog. You probably don't.

Yes... Most dogs are naturals at doing this because dogs are territorial. Its very natural for them to let you know when they hear or see something out of the ordinary.

black or not labs are all soft and try to be nice as long as some one doesnt try to harm their loved ones{owners that is} so even to train them to be gaurd dogs is not such a smart thing .
