We just lost our cat and we already have one dog, last year we lost 2 cats and we got another dog but she didnt work out for us so we gave her to some people who wanted her, the reason the dog we gave away didnt work was because she was a puppy and very energetic and I have a young daughter and no time or patience for training, that dog chewed on my outdoor furniture and EVERYTHING in sight, now we only have a dog whom I have had for just over 2 years, he is perfect, nice and quiet, doesn't get aggressive and gets along with all other animals, even lets birds eat out of his food bowl. My husband has been saying we need a new puppy for the last few days and is out looking for one now, when I ask him why he wants one he says because they are fun, he doesn't even play with the dog we already have!! And he isn't the one who will be here all day cleaning up puppy poop and wee off the floor. We are going to try for another child next year and I don't want a puppy! What do I do?

You tell him what you told us...

You need to tell him plain and simple; NO! Yes, they are fun, but they can't just be turned off and put away like a toy, when you don't want to play with them. Remind him of the puppy you weren't able to honor your responsibility to.Tell him that if he pulls more weight with the existing dog, you'll *maybe* think about adopting a older dog *in the future*, but that a puppy will be totally impractical for the lifestyle you lead and to be around your young daughter...Ah, little boys and their toys! *exasperated sigh* Unfortunately I come across this all too often! I work at a shelter and sometimes the "man of the family" seems more excited and eager than any other member of the family, including the kids. You are a good person, thinking about the reality of this situation!

I think you need to communicate your feelings and concerns to him again.

I also think, if he should decide to go through with getting a puppy that you make it clear that he's responcible for caring for the puppy and training the puppy.. including cleaning up it's poo. And if you need to make a point of it.. and the puppy poos.. as gross as it sounds.. let it sit there until he gets home and realize your serious..

Hopefully your husband respects your feelings.. And hopefully you understand his.. there must be more motive to him wanting a puppy other than their fun.
I'd talk to him again, and get a deeper answer than that..

Finally you can make a compromise.. of agreeing to get a puppy when your oldest child or youngest child (not born yet) reaches a certain age.

Let him read this question. Then if he still wants to go and get a puppy, think twice before having another child with this man. He is out only for himself. Marriage, children and pets are a compromise. He isn't doing his part.

Tell him that it is either a new puppy now and NO baby next year! Also tell him that if he insists on getting another animal then it is his responsibility and he must take it to work with him and let it poo and pee in his car or in the office or where ever he can put it.

You just have to tell him that you can't take care of a puppy in addition to a young child and a dog.

Explain to him puppies take lots of time and energy, wouldn't be fair because babies take time and energy also. It would be best to wait for awhile so you'll have the time and energy for both just not at the same time!

or you could adopt an older dog from a local shelter
