Dogs - August 2007

We have three 2 year old basset hounds and a friend of ours has a 6 month old basset hound. She brings her over to our house all the time but this dog is is horribly behaved. She is aggressive toward my dogs and comes very close to injuring them each time she is over. She bites my dogs and claws them and though she is supposedly a pure bred basset she is two times as tall as them. Her feet and claws are huge and I am very worried that one of my dogs will get injured because they are so laid back and gentle that they will not defend themselves. We do not know what to say to our friend because she sees everything that her dog does as cute and funny. She also bites us and her owner. How can we handle this? I f she gets much bigger she will probably seriously injure one of my dogs and then I do not know what we would do? Advice please?!

My mom and I were thinking about fostering puppies and dogs. But we have no idea where to begin. We love dogs and pets and im going to get a Mini Dacshund and im going to be watching my friends beagle. So has anyone done this before?? And where can I start? Website maybe?

She seems to be very friendly and was good around my little brother. She was a show dog that has had three litters of puppies and her owner wants her to retire and have a relaxing life now. Part of the agreement is that we have to get her spayed. She has a couple of cysts - on on her back and one on her belly. The owner said they can be easily removed by the vet, which I know to be true because I had a Dane before and he had cysts. The only thing I don't like about this dog is that she seems to be very slobbery and my mom doesn't want slime all over the walls and floors. All in all she seemed really friendly, though. We have no other pets at home and there would be no one home during the day (everyone's at work and school) but she would potentially get walked once in the morning by my dad and once by me at night. Do you think getting her is a good idea?

How can I get our dog to walk on a leash. You put a collar on her and she lays down and will not move. If you try to get her up she will squirm, twist, jump and go crazy. We have tried putting the collar on her and just leaving it, and she will lay for hours and not move witht he collar on. We love to go camping and want her to go with us, but without a leash is she not allowed. any comments, help or suggestions on what to do to get her to walk on a leash?

My neighbor adopted an 8 month old Shiz-Tzu puppy from the shelter (he was abused) now she has to get rid of it because he keeps bother their other girl dog..she asked me if I wanted him...I would have just said yes because I have grown attached to him and he loves me too, but I have a 14 year old dog now. I lost sleep all night trying to think of what to do...I don't want to see him go back to the shelter...theres another girl who may take him but shes only 16 and is going to school and working...she said she may not have time to take care of him.

I'm thinking though if I take him in, it will make it easier for me when my own dog passes on.

My neighbor even said she would help me with walking him, shots, neutered, etc.

I just hope I don't start to ignore my old, deaf, dog...lol

I live alone and should be able to make this decision on my own, but I can already hear my brother harping at me about this...I don't know what to do help!! Thanks

How often and how much do you feed a lab? My brother has adopted 2 year old lab and he has lost some weight since then (4 pounds). He feeds him 2 times a day (dry dog food) and he has a lot of exercise during the day. I'm also interested at what time do puppies start to eat hard food and how much. Thank you

I am going to get another dog soon. But I want to make sure that my beagle and that breed will get along and won't fight. So what I'm asking is, what breeds are good with beagles. I might get a mix from the shelter, so do mixes get along with beagles? Don't answer saying the responsibility about owning another dog, I know that!!! Hello, thanks for comming and reading this much appreciated.
I always have to walk home from school every weekday, I go home later than others so when I walk home no one is around to help me when I walk home. WHich is 1 KM walk from my school.

I have a huge fear of dogs and have been attacked from dogs from walking home one time. There were two dogs. I yelled at them and gonna pat them but they started barking and I started to yell at them and they got more angry and I cried so much and yelling for help... The dogs bit my skin off so i walked home with a bleeding leg.

Is there any way to protect myself from dogs, cos I just never want to walk home ever again with the fear of dogs comming to hurt me. Im a really defence-less 12 yr old girl.

My long-hair chihuahua is registered in the AKC (American Kennel Club). She is pure bred. The AKC standard says chihuahuas are not supposed to weigh more than 6 pounds but my chihuahua weighs 8 pounds. Are they going to kick her out of their kennel club if they find out my dog has gained some weight?

When i let my puppy outside in our backyard to chill and play by her self. Sometimes when she lies down and see flies moving she starts to bark because they are moving quick and is probably confusing her? How can i stop her behavior? My puppy also barks when i leave like i have a little play den in my backyard and when i go out out of the playden she starts barking, im guessing she wants to come with me too, but she needs to know not to bark.
