Go to your local shelter and adopt a dog. It is really up to you what kind, big or small, - depends on what you want in a dog. Consider getting a mixed breed.

Well I really like the Dachshund breed. I have two.They are small and come in minature too. You can get longhaired or shorthaired. They are long and most tipically know as a hot dog or wienner dog. They are hunting dogs but make good faimly pets.

A great pyrenees. They may be big, but they are gentle giants. They are great with kids and are really family dogs and will protect you. They would be my first choice. Also if you want a dog a little smaller i would recommend the English setter. I don't have one, but they are my dream dogs.
I would recommend the Great Pyrenees though.

How much space do you have? How much time do you have for exercise and grooming? Do you mind if the dog needs to be groomed a lot? Do you have small children? Do you prefer a large, medium or small dog?

Go get an adult dog from the shelter, humane society, or dog pound. You may literally be saving its life.

I have a mniature pinscher, and it is the cutest thing on earth. It is also a well behaved dog and it barks at anyone who comes near the house.
