Dogs - July 2007

My bro has a 4 yr old unneutered pure rottweiler which is very loving, soft and gentle, good with kids and and not wary of strangers.
He is also super dog friendly(even with stranger dogs) despite the fact that he was not extensively socialized. He grew up with 3 other adult dogs (1 F and 2 M). But he moved from my parents’ place with my bro when he was 1 and rarely meet other dogs. He is always so happy to see his old friends although they are nasty to him. The female snapped at him so many times, he was threatened by some stray dogs too, but not even once he fight back. This poor thing just ran away. No one in the family ever sees him growl.

The rotty is not obedient trained. He knows some basic commands such as Sit, Down, Stay....and he consistently follows commands given by anyone in the family (including family member whom he rarely sees)

Is he born tamed? Is it likely that he will turn dominant/aggressive (common rotty traits) only at later dates?

it's true, vick has been indicted for drowning, electrocuting, hanging and shooting dogs. but i'm sure, just like o.j., he'll have those who believe it's just an, "all white thang", don't-cha know. guilty or not guilty?

I am female and small. also live in a flat. i have read shepherds ok in flats. I' m very active so my dog would have lots of exercise. I wonder if my height would be a detriment - though i am an assertive(but kind) person.

i have a male cat (i think)(might b a girl) well my dog keeps on getting on top of it and it starts 2 hump it!! whenever da cat goes outside the dog starts crying and wants 2 go outside too!! isnt that like against nature??

My friend has a 6 year old female Bichon who has been acting strangely for 2 weeks or so:
1. panting a lot, no matter the environment
2. Cuddlier than normal (this is odd)
3. Whimpering more often
4. Obsessing over and "bathing" favorite plastic toy

Does anybody have a clue of the cause?!

my aunt has this dog who just tured two who stays with us somethimes she is always okay untill its time to go to sleep she never wants to go to sleep even though shes tired i'm not sure why she wont sleep so can someone let me know why and how to get her to sleep??

A couple days ago a guy at the park had a laser pointer and found out that my dog goes berserk over them. I got a cheap one and played with her at the park the last two days, but I swear it's like drugs to this dog. I've clicked her for doing something and she won't eat her treat if she thinks the laser is out. These are treats she goes nuts for usually too. When the laser is gone, she gets kind of sad and sniffs around looking for it for a little while. The guy at the park was using it like a target stick in training his dog to do things, and I've been considering it, but I don't want to do it if it's dangerous/going to drive my dog insane. She doesn't act "normal" - is it just her "new favorite thing" and harmless (I NEVER SHINE IT NEAR HER EYES) or should I put it away for good?

Any constructive input - especially with reasons - is welcome. Thanks!

I have a Greatdane. He's so cute, and such a handfull. He drives me crazy some times, but I love him. He thinks he's a lap dog sometimes, and he's a big baby. He's only 14 months old. I got him when he was 3 months old.

Does anyone else have a Greatdane?

Is it rare for them to be white and have black AND grey spots?
cuz he's a harlequin.

Does my little puppy, Duckie have a vitamin deficiency? He keeps bringing in wood pieces and chewing on our back deck? Is it just a puppy thing or what? I am worried he will get splinters in his little mouth...

Also, he has a broken tooth..is that bad.. he's only 14wks.. I am pretty sure it's a baby tooth, but when will it fall out..I didn't see any exposed nerves and it's not effecting his eating, but I don't know if it's bad or not...

One more thing. We have down comforters and he shredded one of them..feathers were every where.. do dogs have like fetishes (only not a fetish, I don't know the word for it) for things, or could it be the scent of the comforter..or even could he have been angry that we left him alone..I know he hates to be left alone, he usually occupies himself after we leave, what's going on inside our little Duckies head?

I'm getting a berner in 3 weeks and my mom wants me to do some reasch on how to train a puppy like sit, stay, lay down, and how to potty train it. My neighbor's dog cries a lot, and I usually don't think anything of it. Well, she was just crying, and I heard my neighbor come out, yell at her, then I heard her hit it. Hard too... almost like she whipped it w/something. Can I do anything? Like call animal control or something?

never had a puppy before or a inside dog for that matter....anyway how often should i take him out he's doing pretty good he doesn't go everytime i take him. i take him quite often do to the fact that i don't know how often i should take him...

So I'm getting a Malamute puppy next month. He'll be 8 weeks old when I get him. Will he get along with my 2 cats? My cats are male, fixed, and very unagressive. They're lazy and just sit around all day. I plan on giving my puppy plenty of exercise and devoting plenty of time to training him. Just wanted to see what anyone else thinks. Thanks!

imma youngin` and i really want a dog; well a puppy.. and there`s this site.. and they`re located in valencia,CA called, "Galikennels" if anyone has heard of them.. feedback would be nice.. they`re aggressive dogs i know, but if they`re brought up in a nonagressive manner.. this changes, right? or is that wrong? i know they still have the potential to be mean.. but then again so does every other dog.. would they be good with my friends.. around 14/15 year`s old.. my brother; he`s 3. ? or should i just resort to getting a rotweiler.. i want a "mean-looking" dog..
