Recently, a piece of property I own has been broken into for the sixth time. It is maybe 30 minutes from my home, and my colleagues who apparently have expierience in this matter, have told me to get a guard dog. I thoght it was a great idea, but there would be times where the dog would be alone all day, and certainly over night everynight. Are there any dog experts who can help? Can I acquire said dog and not have to worry if it is alone for a few days? (The feeding issue has been solved)

I can't seem to find an answer to this anywhere, and am hoping for some honest help. I recently rescued what I believe is a long-coated chihuahua (not sure of my spelling) from my local shelter. (They told me she was pomeranian, but she's definitely NOT, and the first vet I have taken her to wasn't any help there). She was in pretty bad shape when I rescued her, but she's much better (and happier) now...she even plays! But aside from all that....when I got her the shelter provided paperwork to "transfer" the AKC microchip information to me. (The form has been sent directly to the AKC address on the form with the required money to transfer her microchip to me.) My question is this: if and when I get my new "baby" transferred into my name, what kind of information, if any, will I get from the AKC about my "baby"? Not that it matters to me, because she's a great dog, but I'm just curious about how much of her past I might be able to discover....thanks to all for your help!

Our neighbors across the street from us have 3 pretty big dogs. One "pit bull" and two mutts and they are ALWAYS outside without leashs on!... So anyway, my husband just took our 1 year old American Pit Bull Terrier for a quick walk.. As he was walking up to our driveway one of the mutts from across the street came running up and attacked Brooklyn! They were only fighting for a min. untill the guy came and got his dog but Brooklyn has two cuts on his head and is a little scratched up. My husband said that their dog got Brooklyn first (because Brooklyn was on a leash) but then Brooklyn got the dog by his neck and was trying to shake it around. Neither of them are hurt bad enough to need to go to the vet, but I am really mad!.. This is the 2nd time this has happened but the 1st time neither of them had any marks on them. These people never have their dogs on leashs and they are outside all the time! Should I call someone and let them know that their dogs are always outside unleashed?!?

I've got a four month old, male daschund who just doesn't seem to get the whole "doing his business" outside of the house. I really can't get it through to him. Whenever I get home or wake up, I make it a point to take both of my dogs outside. My other dog has no problem peeing when he's out, but the weenie takes forever to pee if he pees at all. A lot of the time I'll stand outside and encourage him to pee for up to 20 minutes, and it seems as though the moment we step inside he pees on the floor. He has big jealousy issues with the other dog as well. Whenever I praise the other, the weenie comes up and bites or bullies him and tries to get my attention instead. He definitely acts like the little brother. Also, I recently planted tomatoes and strawberries in the back yard. To protect them from bugs, I sprayed them with pesticide, and he ate all the tomatoes and puked. So I began spraying them with my own organic compound, and he has now taken to eating the stems. What do i do?

My usually sweet dog, who is trained and knows his manners, has become a bit protective of me since I've been pregnant. Before, we would go on walks and he loved meeting new people, getting attention, pets, etc , but latley he has been GROWLING at people (strangers) we come across. he has never snapped or bitten anyone, and I really dont think he would, but he is an english mastiff and weighs 150 at one yr old, so his grows are very intimidating, not to mention rude! He has never acted like this before, it is really out of character for him...has anything similar happened to anyone else and if so, how did you handle it? he responds well to basic comands (sit, down, stay) and is still a perfect gentleman on the leash...but the growling almost has me not wanting to take him out on his walks!

I have showed great interest in adopting a dog...well 3 to be exact from local and regional rescue groups. to make a long story short i have filled out one application to adopt one of them. I was told I would be emailed an application by another (yes, i gave them my email address) and haven't received it. The third still hasn't returned my call. These are all three different groups and i have been waiting for over a month on ALL of them to respond to me. I know these all are operated by volunteers but isn't a month a long time to be waiting for a response whether its a yes OR no? I am in the central missouri area (not sure if that helps at all) and if anyone can give me any info on the typical response time i should expect I would appreciate it. i am looking for a specific breed (cocker spaniel) thats why I won't just go to the local pound. thanks for any info and if you can recommend a local rescue group in this area that would be great too!!!

My sister and I went to walk dogs at our local animal shelter and we choose two dogs and set out for a walk. The one dog was acting very goofy stopping every 5 ft to lick his crotch and was walking very slow ( like 5 ft. a minute) so we decided to carry him for about 5 minutes, walk him for about 5 minutes, after about a 2 mile walk we arrived back at the Humaine Society and told the Manager that the one dog was acting very goofy, that's when she said: "oh he was nutered yesterday". I said to myself WHAT?!?! I could not believe she did not tell us on our way out that he should not be walking after a surgery and the dog was obviously in a lot of pain! (yes the manager saw us take the dog)

He is the first one I have seen, I know they are out there but a first for me. How rare are they and if I want to breed him does it have to be to a tri-color or black and white or will we get a fatal white if we breed to another red if I found one?? I'm not a first time dog owner or first with a border collie so I do know the responsibilites of puppies and pet care. I just wanted to know if anyone could help on this issue.

My neighbors abandoned thier house and two adult dogs and two 4 week old puppies. I found the puppies in my backyars and the mother is no where to be found. I have been doing everything I can. I love them to death! They are eating puppy mushed up food soaked in puupy formula. They are happy and seem to be healthy. I give them lots of attention and treat them just like I did my kids when they were babies. They wouldn't take a bottle (I tried many different kinds) or a syringe. So I am just soaking thier puppy mush in puppy formula. They are going to the bathroom well and eating the puppy mush like crazy. I know they are very young to be away from thier mother. I am so worried that they may have some developement issues. Has anyone had to raise puppies from this age away from thier mommy, and if so how did your dogs turn out? I plan on socializing them a lot when they get a lil older. Also when is a good time to start haveing other people handle them and let them go outside to play???

I have a 6 year old dachshund and she is terrified of thunder storms. When thunder sounds, she runs for someones lap, under a bed, or just runs around the house trying to find a "safe place". She also cries. I try my best to help her by petting her and comforting her when she does run to me, but she ends up running off when thunder sounds again usually (sometimes she does stay). Is there anything I can do to make her more calm during a storm? Is it natural for all dogs to be scared of storms like this?
