Our neighbors across the street from us have 3 pretty big dogs. One "pit bull" and two mutts and they are ALWAYS outside without leashs on!... So anyway, my husband just took our 1 year old American Pit Bull Terrier for a quick walk.. As he was walking up to our driveway one of the mutts from across the street came running up and attacked Brooklyn! They were only fighting for a min. untill the guy came and got his dog but Brooklyn has two cuts on his head and is a little scratched up. My husband said that their dog got Brooklyn first (because Brooklyn was on a leash) but then Brooklyn got the dog by his neck and was trying to shake it around. Neither of them are hurt bad enough to need to go to the vet, but I am really mad!.. This is the 2nd time this has happened but the 1st time neither of them had any marks on them. These people never have their dogs on leashs and they are outside all the time! Should I call someone and let them know that their dogs are always outside unleashed?!?

I am not trying to get them in trouble. I just think that their dogs should be on leashes and I am really sick of this now! This has been going on since last september!... If we have enough respect for the people around us to keep our 2 dogs on leashes I think they should do the same!.. OH! and as the guy was slowly walking over to get his dog he was yelling at my husband to get our dog off of his dog! -remember now, our dog was on a leash walking up to our house when his dog ran over and attacked our dog!- Our dog had a choker on and my husband was pulling Brooklyn and trying to push the other dog away as this idiot was telling my husband to get our dog! WOW! I just dont understand some people! I am so mad right now!

One more question... lol.. If Brooklyn was to have really hurt that dog under the same circumstances would we be introuble atall? Im asking because Brooklyn had the other dog by the neck at the end and we dont know if the other dog is really hurt atall.. also, I wouldnt be suprised if it happened again and this guy always seems to take his time walking over to get his dog! So, if his dog were to get hurt would we be introuble?

Yeah.. The more answers I read the more I think I will call someone this time! My next door neighbor/ best friend has 2 young children! She has a 2 year old little boy and a 4 year old little girl.. and the kids are always playing in the front yard. Also, there are alot of older people (75-80+) that live close to us and are always walking their little dogs around. I guess, if that was going to happen, I am glad it happend to my APBT that can stick up for his self instead of my best friends children or someones grandparents and their 10lb dog! I am also glad that it was Brooklyn (1 year old and about 75lbs) instead of our other APBT Destiny (4 months old and about 25lbs!).. But I am still really upset! My dogs are like my children and Brooklyn is such a good boy! He didnt deserve that and I am really pissed! I am definitly going to talk to them and the next time I see those dog out I am going to call someone!.. Should I call animal services, the police or both?

Thats one of the reasons I asked this question before I did anything.. I dont want their dogs to get taken away or put to sleep. They arent really bad dogs and they are very well taken care of.. They just need to be in the house, on a leash or in a fence! I am not mad at the dog I am mad at our neighbors! I would never let either of my dogs out without a leash and they LOVE everyone!

I would call animal control or the police and have the incident reported. This is the kind of thing that has to be addressed before it becomes breed specific, the owner needs to be held responsible for his actions as well as the actions of the dog before something really bad happens. People always have the attitude that it was not that bad so they let it go but what happens if there is next time and what if the dog or person it happens to is not as lucky. These kind of problems can be prevented if people speak up and the law holds the owner accountable. Sorry to preach.
Depends on the law where you live but here in my city as long as your dog was leashed even if your dog caused severe damage to the unleashed dog you would not get in trouble. My brother actually had this same problem and his dog (Rottie) hurt the unleashed dog really bad, but it was the unleashed dog owner who lost the case ( she sued for vet bills) because my brother's dog was leashed.
Do not wait til next time. Call animal control today and explain what happened and ask whether or not the police should be called. Nice dogs do not attack other dogs unprovoked.

Yes, something definately needs to be done. It is people like your neighbors that cause certain places to have breed restrictions..so sad. I would recommend first just going over to them and talking to them, if you haven't already. In most places it is against the law to have your dogs off the leash even in your own yard. So hopefully just explaining the situation and how concerned you are about your safety and that of your dog's and neighborhood children and other animals, they might just listen and keep them on a leash or chain or in a fenced in yard. If they still don't listen, then yes, call animal control, or the police and explain the situation. I personally wouldn't want anything to happen to the animals, but the owners need to be fined or something for letting their "pets" run around like that. And also, if they were well trained pets, they would never have attacked your Brooklyn the way they did, so that raises my suspicions...

Take pictures of the marks on your dog. Document them. Call animal control. Document that. Put it in a file or someplace you can find it if you ever need it. Add to it if any more incidents occur.
Everyone is right, you have the "dangerous" breed, so if something worse HAD happened, YOU would be the one demonized, not the people truly at fault. I know you say you don't want to call animal control if they might be confiscated and put down, but what's worse? You need to take action now before it's your dog being put down in the pound instead of theirs.
Typical scenario: Animal control officer comes out, fines the man for not having his dog on a leash and allowing it to attack another dog, animal control officer goes away.
Best case scenario: Animal control officer comes out, fines the guy for violoating leash laws, vaccination laws and liscencing laws, and goes away.
Worst case scenario: Animal control officer comes out, sees something really amiss, and confiscates the dogs. If they confiscate the dogs, it would be because of something really wrong, not just the guy not having his dogs on a leash. In which case, the dogs would probably be better off up for adoption with the chance at a home that really cares about them.
Hope Brooklyn's okay!

Since your dog was on a leash, the other people are completely responsible and need to know that that's not okay. We have a couple dogs in our neighborhood that run around, and occasionally even my dogs, are off of their leash, but they are the type that will not leave the yard and would never pick fights. My dog that would pick fights is ALWAYS on a leash. They need to learn that if they do not have total control of their dogs, then they should never be off of a leash. Call animal control and issue a complaint.

Yeah I agree that they should be on a leash. I have a similar problem. These two rottweilers live next door to me, and they are ALWAYS out without leashes, and the owner doesn't do anything. We'll be like trying to get up the driveway, and then the dogs bark at us, and they have charged at us. At least I get an adrenaline rush during that so I can out run the dogs. AND, their dogs try to eat my little Yorkie!. Well. I think you should probably call the animal control.

You should definitely let the animal control know whats going what if someones kid were to be walking down the street and the dog attacked it? I know you don't want them to get in-trouble but something needs to be done! You are doing the right thing and keeping your dog on a leash!!! I kinda hope next time your dog tears up his dog to teach him a lesson because you will not get in trouble due to the fact your on your property with your dog on a leash!!! Good luck

Call animal control their dogs are a hazard and could end up killing another dog , you have nothing to fear if your dogs was on leash and on not on their property at the time, since this is the second time the owners have allowed this to happen they definitely are not getting the message so hopefully animal control will make them aware of the rules

Yes! I would first warn the owners if they don't leash their dogs you will call the authorties, if they laugh in your face or ignore you. Call animal control. If they wont help, call the police. Depending on were you live, its illegal for a dog to be off leash in a public area- so if he crossed his property line, he is considered "off leash". Just keep in mind, next time your dog may end up getting an eye ripped out, so get this sorted out now. People like that piss me off also.

hell yes call someone!!! let your local animal control office know what's going on. the fact that your dog is on a leash just makes it more vulnerable to attack from dogs that aren't so that is NOT acceptable. i'm quite sure leash laws are pretty universal around the country so they are in the wrong. my dog is a huge beast and is always on a leash but we have been attacked by unleashed dogs. it doesn't matter if my dog gets hurt or not, its what COULD HAVE happened that concerns me so i always call and report it.

Do you have a leash law in your neighborhood/city/state? If so, call the city animal control and inform them. In the meantime, be careful when you take your baby on walks. Owning a pit bull, you know that it'll be your fault even if someone else's irresponsibility is to blame. That is such a shame.
Punish the deed, not the breed.
