Hi rg,

How far did your puppy fall? Did he fall on his feet or on his side?
You said it was an hour ago and you mention back problems. How is he now, can he walk properly? Is he still whining or showing signs of pain? If he can't walk properly or if he still shows signs of pain you must take him to the vet immediately. He may have broken something or sustained internal injury.

best wishes, chirpy

If the dog is fine now it probably just sprained or tweaked something. I doubt that it has Dachshund Disk Disease as this is mostly commonly seen in dogs in the 4 1/2 to 7 years age range and is rare in a puppy. Don't allow the dog to jump down from a window sill, what is that, about 4 feet? The DCA (Dachshund Club of America) put out a free pamphlet that will tell you everything you want to know about dachshund back problems. One answerer said that back problems are common in dachshunds, they are not but they are more prevalent in the "dwarf" breeds (dachshunds, corgi, basset hounds, etc.) than other breeds. I've owned so many dachshunds that I can't remember all of their names and only one had a full fledged paralysis that required surgery to correct, yes it was 100% corrected.

Dachshunds should not be jumping from a window seel. My parents has a miniature dachshunds a long time ago. (Minnie) fell down some stairs. They did not take her to the vet to have looked at. Two years, later she'd go out side.. but could not go up two steps to come back inside. Come to find out she had pyrslis in her back legs. (she did not have the strength to push her self up the stairs) She was put to sleep cause of that. Take your dog to the vet to have Jungels check out.

I have several dachshunds and their backs are the weakest thing about them and they can hurt them real easy. They also like to dig and I have one that has messed up his back and I have to put him in a little cart to walk now. He still uses the front legs to dig. He has been that way for about three years and still doing great. They are the sweetest dogs you will ever have.If your puppy is still hurting in the am you need to take him to see a vet.You can also put him in the tub with warn water and make it high enough his feet just touch the tub. Stay with him and gently rub his back. You can also give him a BABY aspirin, not adult. keep him warm not hot but warm. Sometimes the heat helps. Good Luck!!! I dachshund is a very loving and personal dog and will bond to their owner very quick.

Dachshunds are notorious for back problems. Can he still walk or is he dragging his legs? Call the vet. Usual treatment for mild back injuries (sprain, NOT disc injuries) is crate rest for several days, along with pain meds.
Don't let him climb and/or jump.
Teach him a wait/stay for when he wants on and off things (bed, couch, etc.)
Put ramps or steps up if necessary.

Dachshunds are notorious for back problems. You need to call a vet and tell them what has happened. Lack of response could leave your dog paralyzed. Don't wait for more answers. Call your vet asap and try to keep your dog somewhat confined until you can get an answer from a vet.

If your vet is unavailable to call you back in the next hour, call an emergency clinic and talk with them.

Dachsies with back injuries need 6-8 weeks of crate rest and medications. Sometimes surgery is best to avoid paralyzed back legs, that can run $3000+. If he displays any one of the symptoms below, get to the vet now. In the mean time place doxie in a crate to restrict his movement so he can do no more damage to the spinal cord until you travel to the vet ASAP!!
This is what crate rest is all about http://users.cyberport.net/~milnerwm/fastfacts.html#anchor433926

Jiingles depends you you to know the right thing to do for him and protect him from damaging himself.

Symptoms of back injury are:
• Crying and/or shaking
• Reluctance to move, jump or to go up/down stairs
• Poor appetite due to pain
• Tense abdomen
• Hunched appearance
• Paralysis to rear legs
• Loss of bladder and bowel control are a severe sign of disc disease

Doxies are prone to the inherited disc disease IVDD. Since symptoms typically don't appear until age 3-6, you can't know for sure if your doxie has IVDD.

So err on the side of caution and treat her as if she has disc disease:
• Regular exercise —Keep them sleek and stream lined as Dachshunds were meant to be—Additional weight can put more stress on the spine
• Lift your Dachshund using two hands, one supporting the chest and one supporting the back- like carrying a football.
• It is essential to limit your Dachshunds use of stairs. No jumping on and off furniture
• The use of ramps is strongly encouraged

Keep this flyer in her file folder for future reference on what to do if there is a back injury. http://users.cyberport.net/~milnerwm/fastfacts/DODGERflyer.pdf

I hope Jingles escaped any damage to his back this time.

Arrange your room where he can't do this as dachsunds are known for having back problems. Even jumping off the bed or steps can cause problems with the back later on. You can also buy a set of steps so that he can run up and down that way.

If he is a dachshund, he would probably only be having back problems if he is overweight. If he continues to keep jumping off your window, it probably isn't what's hurting him, and it's just fun to him. Ask your vet about what an ideal weight for your dog would be and maybe ask about the back pains.

Take that puppy to the vet. He may have injured his back or legs.
