The HSUS statistic estimates 3-4 million ANIMALS are killed in shelters each year. It is not broken down into how many are sick, unadoptable, adoptable, or unwanted.

Remember, the majority of this comes from irresponsible owners who breed and breed their animals or refuse to get them spayed/neutered. If there wasn't such a glut of pets, anytime one came up it would be adopted immediately.

Way too many. Most shelters are not "no kill" and require that all animals which are not adopted within certain time limits be humanely euthanized. At the shelters for which I worked, we averaged adopting about half of all the animals turned in. That's a sad statistic.
The real issue is two-fold. Owners don't spay or neuter. This continues to increase the pet population exponentially. I should have a dime for every client I have now (as a trainer) who says, "Neuter him? It'll ruin him!" Ignorance. Sheer ignorance.
Also, people view these animals as simply things to own and not as living beings. Animals are dropped off on the sides of roads, left in vacated buildings, and generally tossed aside by uncaring owners. Many of these end up in shelters, abandoned, abused and starving.
If we could simply educate the public about the souls of these animals and the need to spay or neuter, we'd be miles ahead of where we are now.
I applaud you for covering this topic for your essay. I hope you get lots of answers that can help you form a compassionate, informative essay.

In California it is approximately 430,000 cats and dogs per year. Don't have stats on how many of each, though I know that cats outnumber dogs.
