He had been crated during the day before for the same amount of time and never had an accident.

I had been leaving him out and then the accidents started happening. It was urinating when I left him out of the kennel and now that I have him crated he is pooping. I get up and let him out, feed him, and then let him out again before I go to work. I actually watch to make sure he go #2. I am trying to sell my house so he needs to be in the crate b/c I can't take chances that he will have an accident on the floor. I plan on calling my vet.

How long are we talking? If you are crating him more than 4 hours, it's not realistic to expect him to hold his potty that long, especially as he ages. If this is the case, try hiring someone to come in and walk him midday or getting him into doggie day care. Remember, crates are dens, not babysitters and they don't counteract neglect.

If it's less than four hours, then you may need to retrain him to the crate. Start all over with him like he's a puppy.

And of course, medical reasons should always be ruled out first. Schedule a vet appointment to ensure that there is no underlying condition.

Why crate him? At 4 years old he is set and steady and can hold it all day. Put down his feed at night and take him potty in the am then keep food up and leave it up till you return. Give him a good long run after you get home. these are hunting dogs and need the work out. Crateing him is a torcher...

If there is no history of urinated while crated, then I would assume that he may be developing an urinary tract infection or urinary crystals. Also consider that leaving him crated daily with acess to water may be causing him to have to pee more frequently. Try to get home for lunches to let him out or consider taking him to doggie day care. But most importanly rule out the illnesses first.

You know my 4 year old beagle started to do that too. He was old enough so I left him stay in the living room but block him in with baby gates. He started to have accidents on the carpet so I took the water away from him. What I do now is let him out when he gets up in the morning, before I get in the shower and then before I leave. When I get home he goes again... it has worked for me.. Good luck with your beagle baby

Is there a place you can keep the dog so he has more space. Like a dog run outside or a laundry room with pee matts for him to go on.

Don't feed the dog before you leave the house for work.
Take the dog out for a quick brisk walk before you go to work.

I hate to see a dog created all day. My dog, once he was well behaved I leave him in the living room only. I leave the TV on and I make a place where he can sit and watch what is going on outside. I have lots of chew toys around for him and I make sure I have given him a brisk walk before leaving him.
He behaves perfectly.

He may have a bladder infection or starting to get separation anxiety issues. Have him checked by the vet to be sure it's not an infection and see if there is someone you can trust to come let him out halfway through the day.

It's that you leave him/her in a crate all day. I recommend you put her in a enclosed, small, space/room and put a pet gate their.
They might be scared of being all alone in a tiny, tiny area, also.
Your dog may have accidents once every now and then, but it should reduce them!

HERE HERE HERE RIGHT HERE !

Before you jump to conclusions
Try this, soon as you get up give him water and food
like a cup of both
Then take him out

when you get home give him water and food then take him out

in the evening give him a half cup of water and just a snack and take him out b4 you go to bed
You didnt mention a schedule or amounts that you give,

When I lived in a h i rise that didnt allow dogs i would snack my dog out during the day with sips of water, then max her out just before I took her out in the evening and take her to the park, when I say max a cup of food and a bowl of water just before she went out and she never had and accident
NOW i LIVEIN AN APT, ON THE GROUND FLOOR, AND IF i LEEAVE ALOT OF WATER IN HER BOWL AND IM NOT WATCHING SHE GOE ONTHE KITCHEN TILE
i SPARAY A BOTTLE OF BLEACH AND SOAPY WATER
AND WIPE, IF IIM GONE LONG SHE GOES ON THE CERAMIC TILE SAME PROCESS LOL

When I had a shower stall in another place she would go in there on her own smart dog huh ?
But never on the rug

remove all bedding and put down newsprint. Then, try to find someone to let him out earlier in the day.
You should definitely take him to the vet to have it looked into. Could be a UTI (urinary tract infection).
