Cats - August 2006

I'm adopting a 3-yr old cat from a lady this Sunday. He's on some petfood brand from petco and I'm hesitant to switch his brand right now since he's been on this one for so long. My family has had cats before, but we always bought the walmart brand of Special kitty for them. Now that I'm on my own, I have no idea how long an 8 lb bag should last. How long will an 8 lb bag last for 1 cat?

Hi, my cat Bud and i are together alot and when we visit with some of my friends who smoke cigarettes i have been wondering if the smoke could harm Bud's lung's? I don't smoke myself and i won't leave Bud in the car (which I think is cruel) since he enjoys playing with my friends.

I have a very vocal cat. But he only seems to meow non-stop when 1.) I come home after being gone for a few hours and 2.) In the morning when we come out of the bedroom (he's not allowed in there for many reasons!) Anyway, he'll just walk around the house MEOWING for a good 20 minutes. I fugure he's either been lonely or he is mad at us for leaving him alone. Does anyone else have any ideas for this odd behavior? Thanks!

One of our cats has been behaving oddly. He has "banished" himself to the outdoors, he refuses to come inside. He has lost a lot of weight. His appetite is a bit lower than it used to be. He has skin issues as well. (a few small patches of hair missing.) Any ideas? I'm hoping to hear from someone who has some experience in the veterinary field. (yes, we are planning to take him to the vet as soon as we can.)

So, my girlfriend, who lives with me, greatly dislikes pets. I love pets, my family has always had them in the house while I was growing up, so I'm accustomed to having those little guys running around.

So how can I convince my girlfriend that cats are great pets and that we should get one?

Any suggestions?

(btw, she is mildly allergic to pets, but then again...it seems like 1/2 of humankind has some type of pet allergy...I actually think it's the pet dander, so a clean home might help to prevent that)

I live in a one bedroom flat, and I'm at work 12 hours a day. I know I am being selfish, but are there any brands of cat that don't mind being on their own all day yet are friendly and affectionate when I do come home? I am so selfish! I'm not going to get one, it's too mean. What do you all think?

One of my kittens (both male, 9 weeks old) doesn't cover his poop when he uses the litter tray, even though his brother does.
He obviously knows what the litter tray is for, as he never goes to the loo anywhere else, but he seems to get confused when it comes to covering it up - he just moves the litter around rather aimlessly, completely missing the poop (and often treading in it in the process!)
His eyesight seems fine, as he has no trouble with his toys or with jumping off things or chasing his brother around the room. Will he grow out of it/learn the proper routine for loo times? At the moment, either I or his brother end up covering his poop - so will be learn from our example?
Pls help, I'm getting fed up finding little pooey paw prints on my carpet!!

We just bought a house where they had a cat. I think the odor is in the carpet. Does it hurt to put pure vinegar on the carpet?

Before I got my kitten, the neighbours had a kitten that came up to my house every day for about an hour. It was ALWAYS fed. It was quite a plump kitten. But they don't seem to care about it anymore. It came to them as a stray and they took it in and looked after it. It stayed in the lady that lives beside me's house for a few nites and they didn't come lookin for it so she rang the number on the tag but they didn't answer. But here's my probkem, for this past week or so, the kitten has been living with me. I have been feeding it and it plays with my kitten. It was starting to get thinner and you could feel its backbone sticking out so thats why I decided to feed it. It even sleeps with my cat in his shed at nite, and I have even left out 2 food bowls now, one 4 my cat and one for theirs. But i hav NEVER tried to keep it with me, I have never deliberately put it in the shed, and I always try to send it home. I'm not tryin to steal her, its bin a week now and they havent come lookin yet

We found him in the morning and his coat looks very clean like he's been taken care of and he has been neutered. He is very, very friendly and won't leave our porch. He has a spot of blood by his nose and mouth and a gash under his eye. We have applied Neosporin to he cuts but then we discovered that there is something wrong with his anus. We have had cats before (between us my husband and I have had 7) and neither of us has ever seen this. It's very large, very red and doesn't look clean despite the fact that the cat is constantly licking himself.
We want to limit our contact with him but he stays right outside the back door. With an infant in the house I'm afraid of the cat spreading parasites. I'm planning to call animal control in the morning, but any ideas what could be going on with him?
I'm guessing he was in a fight.
Also, we have not had any cats in the house for 2 years.

This kitten was abandoned, apparently at birth. Was 2-3 days old when I rescued her, umbilical cord still attached. I have isolated her in a bedroom since, until last week when she has been gradually given more territory, "the run of the house". She has never been outside since I got her, but has begun playing & wrasseling with an older cat (2 yrs.) The kitten eats Purina kitten chow & Fancy Feast cat food. May have gotten into older cat's dry food, or eaten something she shouldn't have. My husband said she hunted, killed & ate a house fly today, for example. She isn't skinny or bloated or too chubby, but seems just right & very frisky. She didn't seem to have pain with passing the stool. They were soft but not runny except sort of coated with blood & or bloody mucous. Will it be dangerous to watch her for awhile, or should I take her in immediately. I live in the country with limited access to vets so it will have to be on an emergency basis if I get in to see one at all.

He is a neutered 2 year old male. He is an inside/outside cat.
He just started urinating in other rooms in the house. My son's bed,our bedroom rug and a piece of clothing on the floor are places that I have discovered urine.
