Probably too late to help you feel better *before* you leave for the vet....
Like most of the others, I agree it's probably a UTI. Antibiotics will help clear this up. UTIs are painful, and that of course, would be a cause for hissing. He feels sick and/or afraid.
Some state dire opinions - renal failure, blockages, etc. But this is most *likely* not the case. The more common UTI will be investigated first; further work will be done if there appears to be further involvement.
If he were my cat, and there was *any* question about his health, I'd be inclined to board him at the vet's while you're gone. Give them a phone # where they can reach you, and authorization to treat him in your absence.
If you have a VERY responsible, close friend who is familiar with the cat, that would be an alternative. Once again, make sure you leave them with written authorization to treat him or take him to the vet in your absence. Have your vet put on his records that so and so will be the caretaker in your absence.
Hope things are going well with your kitty, and this helps ease your worries... Let us know how he's doing!

If it is UTI, the vet will just give you an antibiotic, just as if a person had an infection and in a few days , your cat should be much better. It seems like some cats are prone to getting UTI's so you may need to take extra care to try to see it doesn't happen again. Your vet should have some suggestions.
If you don't have someone that will be keeping a close eye on the cat while you are gone, you may want to board the cat, ask the vet his/her opinon once you find out what the problem is for sure.

Your question is missing so many variables. If it's not physiological, then it's environmental. It's possible you've done something to really upset him. If you have house guests he doesn't like. Or if you've changed his routine in some way. Or if he knows you're leaving and doesn't want to go or doesn't want you to go, could all be great possibilities.
If his problem is physiological and he doesn't have problems being boarded with this vet, it's probably best if you leave him close to home where someone he's familiar with can care for him. This way you know he's safe. And you won't have any extra expenses (cleaning fees) on your trip.

Your cat may have crystal in his urine that have begun to block his urethra which will not let him expell his urine as he should. This can be very serious and can kill him. I had a cat this happened too, he spent a week in the hospital with IV's and everything. After he got back Ihad to give him a special food bought directly from the vet. That darn cat cost me a lot of money, than he ran away about a year later!! We still miss him.

Take him to a vet IMMEDIATELY! Cats urinary tracts can become blocked & they can die from this quickly. He may require a catheter right away, before he blocks 100% & causes his kidneys damage or to fail completely. Please seek help now!
Even if this is a urinary tract infection & not blockage, the sooner he gets treated, the better.
p.s I saw you are going to the vet, I just don't want someone on here without veterinary experience talking you out of it, as I know that could be a deadly mistake. If he is getting blocked, they will keep him for a while anyway, so you may end up having him there while you are on vacation. I stressed going to the vet now because I want your cat safe & healthy - and both of you happy!

UTIs are sooo common in cats. It's just like with a human, makes you grouchy. The vet will give the cat meds and it will be gone soon. If that is it, just leave the cat to itself until it starts to feel better.

Sounds like he's depressed and feeling a lot of stress- have there been any changes in his living environment lately? i.e:
Getting a new pet
Having more guests
Being away from home more often
Neighbours getting new pets, etc.
Otherwise, it could just be predatory behavior which is coming on as he grows a little older- his behaviour should alternate with his hormonal changes.
Any of these things could be causing it- be sure to talk to your vet about the home condition your cat is living in.

It probably IS a UTI. I have been through this many times with my cats. I have ONE cat that is prone to it. She gets it regularly.
All that happens is the Vet will give you an anitbiotic to give her and she will go home. You will just have to watch her carefully as she may get it again.
GOOD LUCK!!

Sound like a urinary tract infection. Cats are very prone to this. I would take her to the vet, they don't go away on their own. While there ask your vet about her food, this can bring on infections if the food contains to much ash. Good luck!
