i asked my cat why they go off into a corner and hide (or lick themselves as if nothing happened) when they make fools of themselves. He said: "Ngraowww..mao mao.. ngaaaooo" Translation: they do that in order to re-play in their kitty minds what happened so that they can pin point exactly what went wrong - so it doesn't happen again. I knew they were smarter than my grandsons...

When something unexpected happens to a cat, he is scared. When he is scared, he hides. Running into a door may be a big surprise, and he feels scared that something should have been there in his way... and falling off the couch is self-explanatory. He was high up, then he fell down... that's not very understandable for a kitten. He hides, hoping that the offending factor will go away. It doesn't of course, and I would find both the occasion and the reaction funny.
My kitty bravely runs into doors now and then and doesn't get embarassed by that at all - but then, he likes running too much, once he gets started... :)

My cat does that. I think they know they are supposed to be elegant and graceful... and when they fall or make a mistake they feel embarrassed. My cat always look around to make sure no one saw him fall off of the table on accident. It is really cute.

I have seen this many times and thought it was hilarious! I DO believe they embarrass themselves. Then they come out as if to say, "I meant to do that." (LOL)

Cats have way too much pride. They embarrass themselves easily.
