Hi there...consider using babywipes (unscented) to wash your kitty. Cats in general disliked being bathed so this is a kinder and alternative solution. However, if your cat has fleas, which sounds like it from the description in your question most products nor bathing will be as effective as Frontline or Advantage both which must be obtained from a vet. Additionally, most over the counter products can be harmful or worse fatal. Too many pets have suffered medical injuries or fatalities as a result of the products. (see link for info about lawsuits against Hartz and Sergents: http://www.hartzvictims.org/modules.php?name=News&new_topic=4)

Consider contacting your local humane society to ask about low cost or free veterinary care if you need help to get the Advantage or Frontline. Some vets in your region may be able to give referrals too.

Most cats hate water. Cats give themselves baths witch is the licking itself thing. If kitty has fleas, i do not recommend flea collars. they just annoy the fleas and move them to the back of the cat. They also annoy the cat. I would call the vet and ask about a product call Revolution which kills every thing on or in a cat with one application between the shoulder blades. Cat cannot reach there.
If you have a shorthair and keep it inside, there is really no reason to ever have to give the cat a bath. If you've let this cat our and it has become infested with fleas, you should ask your vet how best to get rid of the fleas on the cat and in the house.
If cat has to be bathed, you might consider having the vet or a groomer do it.
You can buy kitty straight jackets of mesh material that will restrain a cat safely so you can put on the flea shampoo and rinse it good.

There is a fridge magnet I like: The only thing around here that is self-cleaning is the cat!
Cats clean themselves; that's what the licking is all about. In fact, bathing the cat washes off his natural oils (which he does not like), and you are not doing any good for him. If fleas are a problem, I recommend NO FLEA COLLAR because of the inherent dangers and their lack of effectiveness. Instead, get some brewer's yeast from a health food store and mix it into his dry food. It smells yucky but a lot of cats love it and it keeps the fleas away. We had a flea problem with one of my cats when I was little, and we tried this brewer's yeast suggestion (made by my school librarian), and it worked. My cat died at age 16 after a long life of no fleas. If you do have to wash your cat because he's gotten into something, wear protective gloves to keep yourself from getting scratched as most cats detest being bathed because of the water and because of the intrusion into their domain. And be prepared for his not liking you for a while afterwards. But only ever bathe him when it's absolutely necessary. Otherwise, let the self-cleaning cat do its thing!

Flies?

If you mean fleas, bathing in plain water won't help. Bathing with flea shampoo will, but there are much more effective flea remedies that don't require bathing. (Advantage, Frontline, Revolution.)

Bathing a cat will deplete essential oils in the fur. Its not a good idea unless the coat has become fouled with some substance you wouldn't want kitty to lick off, like oil or something toxic. Normally there should be no reason to ever bathe a cat.

Cats do not like water. I have been working at a rescue for years now, and I am yet to meet a cat that likes water. If your cat is attracting flies, you need to find a safe spray for cats at your vets or a good well known high quality pet shop that flies don't like. Bathing your cat will result in the cat getting very stressed and possibly doing a runner from your house. Do not use a flea collar. Collars are not at all good for cats. I have seen many who have managed to get their front paw through the collar, no matter how tight, and it has ripped their armpit. This has resulted in many cats having to have one front leg amputated.

Most cats don't like water. You don;t need to give your cat a bath, they lick off the dirt. If it is fleas you are concerned about, I have some suggestions. You really shouldn't get a flea collar, I found they don't work that well. You should buy Frontline plus, to apply follow directions on box. As well as keeping fleas away, it does ticks. Frontline plus also comes with a free little bag of catnip. Also, comb your cat to take out dead fleas. Hope this helps!

Cats wash themselves by licking, it doesn't necessarily mean he has fleas, which I hope you meant instead of flies. Scratching would indicate fleas. If your cat has fleas, he doesn't necessarily need a bath. Talk to your vet about what can be done for fleas besides flea baths, like an ointment or even a simple flea collar.

I have never ever bathed any of my cats, and I have had cats all my life. I don't understand why people think they need to bathe them, they wash themselves so do not need to be bathed at all. A decent flea treatment from the vets such as Frontline should kill the little beasties.

A cat licking itself is giving itself a bath. Use one of the "spot" flea treatments like fronline to keep the little buggers away. Cats rarly need real baths.

My dog hates baths too. We have to drag him downstairs to get him in the tub. You can go to Meijer or some place and get some of those bath wipes. for pets. We tried that before and it seemed to work. do this often to get the cat used to it if the cat dosent like it still, If that doesnt work then just do it once a month.-good luck
