I'm adopting a 3-yr old cat from a lady this Sunday. He's on some petfood brand from petco and I'm hesitant to switch his brand right now since he's been on this one for so long. My family has had cats before, but we always bought the walmart brand of Special kitty for them. Now that I'm on my own, I have no idea how long an 8 lb bag should last. How long will an 8 lb bag last for 1 cat?

We use a 3 1/2 lb bag of Purina Pro plan. We share between 2 cats, and also give wet food. It depends on how much dry food you give, and if you're also giving wet food. We go through a bag in about 2-3 weeks.
BTW, the higher the quality of food, the less the kitty litter box will smell. It'd be a good idea to stick with the Petco food.

A 2.5 lb. bag usually lasts me about a month, if you're only feeding the cat 1 cup a day. So, if I did my math correctly (which I was never good at), it should last about 4-4.5 months. When it comes to changing cats to a new food, do it slowly over a two week period - start by adding the new food to the old. Cats tend to have sensitive stomachs.
Example:
If you're feeding the cat a cup a day, start by adding a 1/4 cup new food, to 3/4 cup old; after a bit make it 1/2 new & 1/2 old; then 3/4 new to 1/4 old and then finally only the new food.

Good luck!

You are smart not to change the food immediately. And when/if you do slowly mix the two or kitty tummy could suffer. Also find what kind of kitter litter the cat is used to, for many do not like the change.

My cat does not seem to eat that much and an 8 pound bag lasts about a month. Get the cat's normal food and use the Walmart band as a treat on a separate plate.

I use the Special Kitty brand for my 10 yr. old Siamese. The 8 lb. bag lasts him about 3-4 wks. I feed him about 1/3 cup twice a day(he is an indoor cat). The average cat needs 2/3 - 3/4 cup of food a day, depending upon size and activity. If the cat is not very picky about food you can make the switch with no problems. Try it and see. I alternate between the hairball control and urinary tract formulas.

I have 7 cats and a 17 lb bag of food lasts for almost 2 weeks.

If I were you, I would keep him on the brand he has been eating right along. If you plan on switching brands, begin by blending his current brand with the new brand for a couple of weeks. Start with just a little of the new brand and increase the amount daily until he is on the new brand only.

Well, about the whole switching to a different cat food thing, be sure to mix it up.
--days 1-3--1 part new food,3 parts old food
--days 4-7--1 half new food,1half old food
--days 7-10--3 parts new food,1 part old food (day 13-all new food)

good luck!! and it should last about 2 months

for one adult cat, the bag should last at least 4 weeks, depending on how much he eats. If you want to switch, go get the wal_mart bag, I usually buy the one with veggies or the urinary trac one, and mix the two bags together, this way you can slowly switch his diet. Just slowly use less and less of the petco brand and introduce more and more of the Wal_mart one. Good luck with your new Kitty.

About 4-5 weeks depending on the fatness of the cat and how much it whines at you for more food then you give in, and of course, howmuch normal tinned catfood you give it aswell, you can't just give them the dry stuff and nothing else.

In My house, They Only Last a week Cause Me and my wife eat them like cerial. (Very Beneficial Healthwise)

It depends on how much the cat eats, but easily 5 to 6 weeks.
