Would it be safe to just take a branch from any tree outside and put screws into them and make your own natural perches? I went to petsmart and was going to purchase each natural perch for about 8 dollars each adn my brother in law was with me. He works with a lot of wood adn said that I could just make them myself with screws and branches off a tree. But, I am worried about bugs and little mites and stuff. Would it be safe to do what he said by just using regular branchs or should i just buy the ones from the pet store?

I got my parakeet in Feb. of 07, and now it's Aug. of 07..my parakeet hasn't grown. I've heard that this isn't right and that parakeets are supposed to be bigger by now then MY parakeet is. I'm really worried somethings wrong..is he just a runt or is this serious?

Two of my female parakeets had their very first clutch this year, all is going well with them raising their babies (knock on wood) but I was wondering - how old should my baby parakeets be before I start handling them, and when is the best time to wean them to begin hand taming?
My oldest on hatched on the 15 of July, and the youngest one of that clutch hatched on the 26th of July. The nest box is starting to get really crowded, and I'm hoping soon enough, my oldest one will venture out. Any other advice about raising baby parakeets? Thank you.

What can I do about it? He is otherwise healthy, happy and playful. The other (I think) is female. Her nose changes colors periodically.
Both eat the same premium food, get minerals, egg supplement, fresh greens, and live in the same cage.
He IS a bit of a "scardy-cat" and won't allow handling.

I live in Michigan and we went out on a boat today and in the channel connecting 2 lakes there was lots of ducks, most of them looked like these ducks: http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/97/Ducks_in_plymouth,_massachusetts.jpg/800px-Ducks_in_plymouth,_massachusetts.jpg And there were a few pure white ducks that looked something like this: http://www.natures-desktop.com/images/Wallpaper/Fullsize1280/Bird-wallpaper/White-duck-at-belper.jpg and then there were 2 or 3 black and white ducks!! What kind of ducks do you think the black and white ducks could be?? Thanks!! (Srry I don't have a pic of the black and white ducks!!)

One of my parakeets, Kairi, fell through the middle of the chimney in my living room and ended up all the way at the bottom of the fire place.. Thank god our fire place wasnt in use...but because it wasnt being used, there was a huge metal wall blocking the whole fire place, and my parakeet, got stuck inside for a while.. after about 15 to 20 minutes I was able to rescue her, but she came out really dirty from all the dust inside... I washed her once yesterday and once today but the dust doesnt seem to come off of her.. She was a white parakeet but now she's all grey!! Im really worried because I dont know if she can get sick from this.. What should I do? Also, she is still flying around just fine, but how would I know if she is hurt, because she did end up all the way at the bottom from where the ceiling was (where the middle of the chimney is)...would she be flying around normally if she was even a little bit hurt??

My daughter has a cold. Could he have caught the cold from her and that be his problem? We have not changed the brand of food he is eating and we clean his water bottle every day.

There is this pet store in my county that has the widest selection of animals in it...i go in there and ALL the animals are disgusting and dirty and not well kept at ALL. I look down and there is a cherry headed conure named *Paco* in a dog crate with ONE toy that has debre ALL other it, nasty food nasty EVERYTHING.. i asked the owner to talk it out & he was horribly mean.. buttt to make a long story short i rescued him.

i bought him his own california santa barbara cage with a playtop many MANY toys, top of the line food..EVERYTHING.

iv had him for a little less then a year but i have gotten so attached. he only trusts ME.. noone can touch him but ME..I am the only person that matters in his world.

but as of two weeks ago he has started to lunge and bite me. for no reason. i havnt changed any routine.

im thinking about giving him up, i dont know what i can do. it breaks my heart that hes acting this way.

what should i do? can a troubled parrot ever let go of the past?
